What to Watch the Week of August 6: Outlander’s Mid-Season Finale, Red, White and Royal Blue, and Only Murders Season 3

The first week of August has never been busier in the TV landscape, as Outlander prepares to close out the first half of its seventh season, Only Murders in the Building returns for season three, and the highly anticipated rom com Red, White, and Royal Blue finally arrives.

Let’s start with Outlander, which after Friday won’t return for new episodes until sometime in 2024. It bums me out because season seven has been firing on all cylinders; at the same time, this gives us something to look forward to, especially knowing Droughtlander won’t be as unbearable as the last time. We left off with Rob Cameron kidnapping Jemmy and apparently going through the Stones; now Roger must rescue his son, while also trying to figure out how Rob (if this is indeed what happened) was able to travel back in time. I’m fascinated by this storyline and can’t wait to see how it unfolds. Also, I kinda want Buck Mackenzie to stay in 1980 and acclimate to life there. I’m enjoying him way more than I thought I would. As for Jamie, he looks unconscious after fighting in the Battle of Saratoga. This is Jamie Fraser, though, so not for one second do I believe he’s seriously hurt. Friday night will be appointment viewing, won’t it?

Now let’s talk about new premieres, including the third season of Only Murders in the Building. Meryl Streep, Paul Rudd, Jesse Williams, and Ashley Park join Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez this season. I’m not usually one for stunt casting, but it works in this case and makes for a fun watch. Plus, all four of those actors make their debuts fairly early in the season so you don’t have to wait multiple episodes—or weeks—for them to show up.

On the film front, you won’t have to leave your home to see Red, White and Royal Blue, which will stream on Prime Video. In case you haven’t read the best-selling book by Casey McQuiston, it’s about the son of the American president who ends up falling in love with England’s Prince Henry. It starts off a bit cheesy but quickly gives way to a thoroughly enjoyable, important, and sexy movie with two very charismatic leads (Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine).

And that’s just a sampling of the newness coming this week. From Men in Kilts season two (which we’ll have an exclusive sneak preview of on Tuesday) to Netflix’s Painkiller, there’s a lot worth staying home for. Check it out below, and I’ll see you back here next Sunday for a preview of The Summer I Turned Pretty’s second season finale.
