Authorities said she was abducted at 12th Street and Campbell Avenue around 9:15 Saturday evening and were worried she was in imminent danger.
An Amber Alert was thus issued on her behalf.
Schenectady police conducted a search of the General Electric campus early Sunday afternoon.
Halo Branton was found in a 10-foot-deep pipe access area on the campus. The pipe contained water and mud at the base.
She was taken to an area hospital for treatment but tragically did not survive.
Authorities believe Persia Nelson dropped her daughter into the pipe.
According to court documents, she left the child there “essentially to die without seeking any help whatsoever.”
Lt. Ryan Macherone of Schenectady Police Department was near tears announcing Branton’s death during a press briefing Sunday afternoon.
“It’s probably the worst thing I’ll have to do,” he said.
Nelson pleaded not guilty during her arraignment.
She has been remanded to Schenectady County Jail with bail set at $500,000 cash or $1 million bond.

Nelson had only been in Schenectady for a few months and previously stayed at a shelter in Albany County.
She is originally from Columbia County, where she has another child from whom she does not have custody.
This heartbreaking incident has shocked the community and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Halo Branton’s death.
“She didn’t even get to celebrate her first birthday. Do you know how sad that is?” Nyree, a cousin of Branton’s father, told reporters after the police briefing.
“She was beautiful, she was charming, she was very intelligent. She looked just like her father,” she said of Baby Halo.
According to WNYT, Persia Nelson has another child in Columbia County who she does not have custody of.
Though Nelson is currently facing manslaughter charges, prosecutors told the judge that an autopsy is being performed Monday and that “significantly and enhanced charges” could be added as the case progresses.
“There’s simply more to this than manslaughter,” he said.
Schenectady is a city in Schenectady County, New York, United States, of which it is the county seat.
As of the 2020 census, the city’s population of 67,047 made it the state’s ninth-most populous city and the twenty-fifth most-populous municipality.
The city is in eastern New York, near the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson rivers. It is in the same metropolitan area as the state capital, Albany, which is about 15 miles (24 km) southeast.
Schenectady was founded on the south side of the Mohawk River by Dutch colonists in the 17th century, many of whom came from the Albany area.
The name “Schenectady” is derived from the Mohawk word skahnéhtati, meaning “beyond the pines” and used for the area around Albany, New York.
