With “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” opening in cinemas next Friday, filmmaker Adam Wingard has been out there promoting his project and was inevitably asked about what’s next.
Wingard’s name is linked to a number of films, one of the most notable being a ‘hybrid CGI’ feature adaptation of the iconic late 1980s Rankin Bass animated series “Thundercats”.
That show revolves around a group of humanoid cats who must flee their planet of Thundera after it’s destroyed. Crash-landing on another planet, Third Earth, they must thwart the evil sorcerer Mumm-Ra who is bent on killing them off.
Speaking with ComicBookMovie.com, Wingard was asked for an update on how that film is going to which he says he and collaborator Simon Barrett are still penning the script:
“Simon and I are still actively working on the script. We finished our last draft basically right when I was going into production on [‘The New Empire’] and we just had to put everything on hold. Right now, we’re actively working on it again. So whether that means that’s the next thing I do or…I’m not sure. But it’s definitely one of the top priorities I have right now in terms of working on a script.”
It was previously reported that while the animated series served as a jumping-off point, Wingard will take the property “in a direction he has been thinking about for many years” and will boast a “hyper-real look and somehow bridges the gap between cartoon and CGI”. It will also retain the 1980s aesthetic.
The director also tells DiscussingFilm that he’d love to do a “Godzilla vs. Kong” ‘trilogy capper’:
“The whole idea that if you’ve done two movies, like, maybe you should just go ahead and do a third because, as you said, there’s a trilogy in there. I definitely think there’s more story to this, and I think that I have more story to tell. It just depends on how it does and how things kind of shape out… I would be very excited to be able to come back on for another one if things worked out!.”
Wingard’s name also remains attached to a remake of “Face/Off” and an adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s “Hardcore” comic.
