Two months after the pilot order, Disney has handed out a formal series order for a sequel series to “The Wizards of Waverly Place” with stars Selena Gomez and David Henrie reprising their roles as Alex and Justin Russo.
Henrie will star in the cast of series regulars alongside Janice LeAnn Brown who will play the lead role of young, powerful wizard Billie. Also onboard are Alkaio Thiele and Max Matenko as Justin’s sons and Mimi Gianopulos as his wife.
The new series revolves around Justin as he chooses to live a mortal life with his family. When Alex (Gomez) brings Billie to his home for help, Justin must mentor the wizard-in-training.
Gomez will guest star in the premiere and production will begin next month in Los Angeles ahead of premiering later this year on both Disney Channel and the Disney+ service. Gomez and Henrie will executive produce the series.
Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas (“Raven’s Home”) penned the pilot and executive produce alongside Gary Marsh (“Descendants: The Rise of Red”). Andy Fickman (Race to Witch Mountain) directed and executive produced the pilot and will direct multiple episodes of the series.
Disney Branded Television most recently produced the successful “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” and “Goosebumps” series, both of which were renewed for second seasons.
