James Wan’s “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is sinking into the box-office abyss as the $205 million budgeted superhero sequel is expected to earn $19.5 million over the weekend and an estimated $26 million through New Year’s Day on Monday.
That’s a three-day drop of only 30% from last week’s disappointing opening, which isn’t bad. The good news is at 11 days, the film is tracking ahead of “The Marvels” and far better than “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” but is slightly behind “the Flash”. It has made $258 million globally after two weeks of release.
It came in second behind “Wonka,” the Timothee Chalamet-led film about the beloved and eccentric chocolatier which has continued to be a success story this holiday season.
It will take the top spot at the box-office this weekend with $24 million for the three-day (up 33% from last week) and $31.8 million for the four-day. It has also racked up an outstanding $386.9 million worldwide to date.
“Migration” is in third with with $17.2 million for the three-day and $22.3 million for the four-day, with a global total at $100 million. “The Color Purple” is fourth with a further $13 million three-day and $17 million four-day – pulling in a solid $50 million during its first week in cinemas. “Anyone but You” closed out the top five with $9 million three-day and $11.5 million four-day.
Sixth went to George Clooney’s “The Boys in the Boat” with $8.3 million at the three-day and $11 million at the four-day, and “The Iron Claw” is set for $5 million for the three-day and $6.9 million for the four-day.
Michael Mann’s “Ferrari” has crashed at the starting line, in its first full weekend its come in eighth with $4.1 million for the three-day and $5.2 million for the four-day.
