Whilst “Star Wars: Ahsoka” will be the next “Star Wars” series to make it to the public, another is on the way later this year in the form of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” which remains a fairly mysterious project.
Aside from some stills, there hasn’t really been anything released from the project, which hails from recent “Spider-Man” trilogy helmer Jon Watts and “Spider-Man: Homecoming” co-scribe Christopher Ford.
We do know Jude Law stars in the series that is said to have a “Goonies”-style vibe and sounds like this franchise’s version of “Star Trek: Prodigy” (albeit in live-action form).
The story follows a group of kids around ten years old and from a tiny little planet who accidentally get lost in the “Star Wars” galaxy and must find a way home.
Law and Ford appeared on a recent episode of EW’s Dagobah Dispatch podcast and offered a little bit more of a hint as to what to expect. Ford says:
“Skeleton Crew’s tone is an adventure. We wanted it to be a lot of fun. But of course, along with adventure comes the downside of it, which is danger. And when the kids are in danger, it’s extra fraught. So we played with that, but overall we wanted it to be just a fun adventure.
Hopefully, it can be for all ages. When we told Kathy Kennedy about that, we wanted to go for that Amblin tone, which she perfected over the years; what she would say is that they never thought of those as movies for kids. They just happen to be about kids, a story of a kid going on an adventure. So it could be for anyone.”
Law can’t say much about his character, rumored to be a Jedi who escaped Order 66 in a story that he sees as exploring both light and dark elements:
“I can’t tell you very much about my character. He is someone the children meet on their attempt to get home. He is like a lot of the world that they experience: contradictory, and at times a place of nurture and other times a place of threat.
Because it’s through their eyes, at times there’s a sort of goofy nature and a goofy relationship between the kids and the adults. And then other times it’s really quite dark and quite scary, which I guess is what the world probably looks like to an awful lot of 11-year-olds.”
The series also stars Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Tunde Adebimpe, Kerry Condon and Jaleel White.
The Daniels and David Lowery are among those who directed episodes of the eight-episode series which is currently scheduled to be released on Disney+ sometime in 2023.
