Court documents published this week, as part of Microsoft’s recent legal battle with the FTC, appear to have accidentally revealed a mid-gen refresh of the Xbox Series X console design according to The Verge and VGC.
A published picture of the box, codenamed ‘Brooklin,’ retains the size and 1970s Eastern Bloc secret police headquarters aesthetic of the current Series X – this time however it’s cylindrical rather than cuboid.
One other big change on the exterior – no more disc drive with the console being all-digital whilst the front port is also now USB-C with power delivery. Internally the chip’s die will shrink to 6nm.
The documents focus on the console quality of life improvements rather than power increases. Internal storage is 2TB, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, improved IO and draws less power – especially on standby.
Also coming is ‘Sebile’ – a two-tone white/black Xbox controller with precision haptic feedback, accelerometer features, Bluetooth 5.2, quieter buttons, modular thumbsticks, “VCA haptics doubling as speakers”, a rechargeable and swappable battery, and a ‘lift to wake’ capability.
The documents, which are reportedly dated from April 2022, suggest the new controller launch in late May next year, a Series S refresh at $299 in September 2024, and the Series X refresh in November 2024 at $499.
The details come as a part of what’s being dubbed one of the biggest Xbox leaks in history. The unredacted documents, some of which are years old and so likely out of date, suggest they aim to develop a cloud gaming/physical hardware hybrid game platform for a potential 2028 debut.
The documents also indicate (via The Verge) that their gaming roadmap includes remasters of “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” and “Fallout 3” along with an all-new “Doom Year Zero” title, “Ghostwire: Tokyo 2” and “Dishonored 3”.
