YouTube Testing Playable Online Games?

A new article in The Wall Street Journal reports that Google is internally testing a product allowing people to play video games via YouTube.

The outlet, citing an internal email sent to employees, indicates the new product is called ‘Playables’ and gives users a chance to play games instantly on mobile devices or desktop computers via the video streaming platform.

This would mark the latest effort on the video game front from Google following the cloud-based platform Stadia which allowed players to stream their library inside Chrome and on Chromecast devices.

Stadia boasted impressive tech, but it didn’t gain enough traction with the public, and so was shuttered this past January after three years in operation.

The Stadia tech was expected to be disseminated into other Google products. According to Forbes there is “no set plan for this [Playables] to roll out any time soon, as it’s still just in testing at Google”.

Also not clear is what the scope of titles available will be, but it follows in the wake of other services like Netflix who have made games playable directly via their own video streaming services and apps.
