With “Rebel Moon” now out on Netflix, filmmaker Zack Snyder has been doing some press and recently spoke with beloved cinephile movie tracking site Letterboxd.
They asked him to name the four movies which he would dub his absolute favorite. The result was a quite healthy mix of 1970s and 1980s classics.
The list includes George Lucas’ original “Star Wars” from 1977, Bob Fosse’s semi-autobiographical 1979 fantasy drama “All That Jazz” starring Roy Scheider, John Boorman’s legendary 1981 Arthurian fantasy feature “Excalibur,” and David Lynch’s celebrated 1986 neo-noir mystery “Blue Velvet”.
In particular, he focused on his “Star Wars” selection, saying: “You don’t include that, and you’re my age, I take small issue. I’d be like, really?”
All four films listed are considered cinematic classics. Multiple publications, including the American Film Institute, have ranked “Blue Velvet” among the greatest American films ever. “All That Jazz” was nominated for nine Oscars, won four, and has been selected for preservation by the National Film Registry. “Excalibur” helped launch the careers of Liam Neeson, Patrick Stewart, Gabriel Byrne and Ciaran Hinds along with being a major early work of Helen Mirren.
Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” famously grew out of a failed pitch for a “Star Wars” film – the resulting two-part film will be Snyder’s original vision of what he would’ve done. The first of those is available on Netflix now with the second coming in April.
