Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav says the consolidation of the media industry, specifically its forays into streaming, will potentially pick up sharply in the near future.
Speaking with CNBC (via MSN prior to the annual Allen & Co. conference in the Idaho ski town, the WBD chief reportedly indicates more mergers/acquisitions (ala Disney & Fox, or Paramount & Skydance), or pacts & partnering agreements such as bundling are likely on the way.
He tells the outlet that “probably” over the next year or two, we are “going to see some real consolidation, whether that happens from companies buying each other, or jointly going after streaming together.”
That’s partly why he’s excited about Venu, his own company’s upcoming Venu sports streaming joint venture with Disney and Fox. He says Venu will combine the power of Fox, Warner Bros. and ESPN which he says “have about 75% of [all] sport”.
The comments follow in the wake of talk Warner Bros. Discovery were open to exploring a joint streaming venture with Paramount, though that was before the latter’s recently set merger with Skydance.
