The 2023 MTV VMAs celebrated some of the biggest and brightest music stars of the year. The ceremony, held Sept. 12 in Newark, NJ, awarded trophies to artists including Ice Spice, Nicki Minaj, Anitta, Tomorrow X Together, SZA, and many more. Taylor Swift was the night’s biggest winner, taking home multiple awards including video and artist of the year. The ceremony also honored two legends: Shakira recieved the Video Vanguard Awards and Diddy was awarded the Global Icon Award.

This year’s nominees were announced back on Aug. 8, and Swift led the bunch with a total of eight nominations, including seven nods for her song “Anti-Hero” from “Midnights,” as well as a nomination for artist of the year. SZA had the second most nominations with a total of six, followed by Olivia Rodrigo, Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat, Kim Petras, Sam Smith, and Miley Cyrus, who all trailed behind with five each. Many pointed out when nominations were announced that women dominated in many categories, including artist of the year (in which only women were nominated), and they swept the awards, too.

The show also honored a record-setting 35 first-time nominees, including GloRilla, Boygenius, Reneé Rapp, and Ice Spice. An Afrobeats category has also been added for the first time. Additional nominees included Shakira, Dua Lipa, Pink, Dove Cameron, Kendrick Lamar, Maluma, and Beyoncé, who netted a nomination for artist of the year.

Ahead, check out the complete list of nominees for the 2023 MTV VMAs, and all the winners so far.
