My current iPhone is busted. Should I get the new iPhone 15?

So, the million-dollar question: is the iPhone 15 the crown jewel in Apple’s repertoire? For me, it’s a resounding yes, just that it would be the standard iPhone 15… naturally. While I could go for the now cheaper iPhone 14, just adding a bit more for the iPhone 15 promises a device that’ll stand the test of time better in the long run. This, dear reader, is my once-in-a-half-decade splurge, and I’m determined to make every penny count. I’m sure many other Malaysians are also thinking the same thing. Thankfully for me though, my trusty old iPhone is actually still working, but if you’re like me and use an older iPhone then the standard iPhone 15 could well be an investment that you should start considering a bit more closely.

76% iPhone 15 Review: big camera upgrade, but still no ProMotion

Compared to the iPhone 14 from last year, the iPhone 15 is somewhat more worthy of being called a “new generation”. It has a significantly better main camera compared to its latest predecessors, a more refined design with incremental but very effective changes like the USB-C and curved edges, and finally replaces the outdated notch with the Dynamic Island. But when we factor in the lack of a higher display refresh rate and the fact that there is zero utilization of the USB-C port, the iPhone 15 leaves us wanting more. It almost feels like a slightly worse version of the iPhone 14 Pro, which can be the better purchase if found refurbished or second-hand for the same price tag as the iPhone 15, which is $799. That is if you don’t want USB-C with your new iPhone. Of course, you can wait for Google’s Pixel 8 to see if that tickles your fancy, or take a look at Samsung’s Galaxy S23 which does have a 120Hz screen refresh rate and a dedicated telephoto camera, often enjoying healthy discounts, unlike Apple’s iPhones.

Hands-on with Apple’s new iPhone 15 and 15 Plus

I’ve always felt that the “regular” iPhones have more attractive finishes and it’s true for this year too. The iPhone 15 will come in five finishes and they are: Blue, Pink, Yellow, Green, and Black. My picks would be Blue and Pink because they look the most punchy and vivid. Like the Pro iPhones, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus have contoured edges that make the phone easier and more comfortable to hold. They feel less squared off and less sharp at the edges. In terms of size, they feel about the same. Screen sizes are unchanged so the iPhone 15 still has a 6.1-inch display while the iPhone 15 Plus has a larger 6.7-inch display.

Small changes, then, but they add up to something that’s significantly more compelling than last year’s iPhone 14. That said, $799 still feels a lot for a phone with a 60Hz screen and a dual-camera array, so some may feel that spending extra on an iPhone 15 Pro makes sense. Indeed, bargain hunters may wonder if buying a pre-owned iPhone 14 Pro makes even more sense, given the iPhone 15 is made up of its components (without the telephoto lens and 120Hz screen). iPhone 15 vs iPhone 15 Plus: Which phone should you buy?

To be honest, the decision between the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus should be easy. The one question that you have to ask yourself is: do I want a big screen? Once you’ve decided that, you can choose accordingly. There isn’t much more to these phones, and the other differences – namely battery life – are negligible and shouldn’t be a big factor in your choice. If you’re on the fence or don’t really care about a larger screen, our advice is to save your money and pocket space. Spending $100/£100 just to get a bit more battery life isn’t worth it.

Apple iPhone 15 hands-on: Big upgrades for the standard models

The Apple iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are significantly more exciting than the iPhone 14 was – the iPhone 14 Plus was exciting because it was a new format so I’m, not counting that in this statement. The majority of the design remains the same for these standard models (which isn’t a bad thing), but the additional of new colours, a new matte finish which is absolutely delightful and Dynamic Island make for fresh devices and ones that will deliver a different experience too. That’s just surface level too. Add to that the upgrade in processor and upgrade in main camera sensor and things get even more interesting. The iPhone 14 wasn’t all that exciting when it launched in 2022, but there’s already more to be said for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, and that’s before we’ve used them properly in the real world. First impressions suggest that if you don’t opt for the iPhone 15 Pro Max this year, the standard iPhone models could definitely be the ones to buy.

The new standard iPhone 15 embraces what was once a Pro-only feature in the Dynamic Island, while also boasting a new higher-resolution 48MP main camera, compared to the 12MP unit on its predecessors. USB-C is now finally the iPhone’s port of choice, but the fact that it’s still stuck with a 60Hz display and little in the way of promised battery improvements hold the iPhone 15 back from true greatness.

I could see myself upgrading to either the iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Plus because they now have more of the premium features Apple usually restricts to its Pro phones. There’s still an iPhone 15 vs. iPhone 15 Pro divide, but the additions to the standard model make it feel less stark. And I’d be saving at least a couple hundred dollars with the iPhone 15 instead of the Pro. Dynamic Island, the upgraded camera sensor and a fast A16 Bionic chip may have been on the iPhone 14 Pro first, but that doesn’t make them any less welcome on the iPhone 15 now. Throw in the telephoto capabilities and USB-C connectivity, and you have a winning flagship at a more attractive price.

iPhone 15 preview: will Apple’s base flagship offer more this time?

If we were to look at the iPhone 15 from a birds’-eye view, it is easy to look at it as the iPhone 14 Pro but without the better display and telephoto camera. So, is it really worth the money? Well, if you manage to find a refurbished, second-hand, or some kind of sweet deal on last year’s Pro model that brings its price to around $800, then you should probably go for that one. Not to mention that recent reports state the iPhone 15 might get a price hike compared to last year’s base model, which would make it a tough recommendation if the 14 Pro is an option. If you cannot find a nice deal on the iPhone 14 Pro, however, then the iPhone 15 would still be a good upgrade. This statement is more valid if you own an iPhone 12 or older, but there are also meaningful improvements like the much better main camera and the Dynamic Island (if that is something you care about) that the iPhone 15 has to offer.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

It is a small display format for smartphones. You shouldn’t be severely defective in vision, and you won’t see much detail on the screen and only have a small resolution available. For that, the device should be small and handy, easy to transport.
