The championship game of the Black College World Series took place Saturday and it was a chance for redemption for Bluefield State.

Just one day after falling to Talladega College in the winner’s bracket, Bluefield rode a four-run ninth inning in order to take home the championship via a 5-1 score.

Despite the final score, the majority of the game was a pitcher’s duel. Talladega limited Bluefield to just six hits through the first six innings, and Bluefield starter Zach Powell twirled 8.1 innings while scattering nine hits and recording seven strikeouts.

Peyton Lewis hit a clutch double in the top of the ninth, which set the tone for a destructive inning and put the Big Blue in command heading into the bottom of the inning. Tahraun Hammond would come in and shut the door in the bottom of the inning, securing the victory.

Lewis had three hits, Hammond and Noah Moritz had two each and Chris Larkin delivered the dagger single that drove in the two winning runs.

This was Bluefield’s second tournament win in the four years of the event and the program ends its season with a 33-15 overall record.
