Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones may not be too keen on Brandin Cooks’ flying habit, but the wideout assured Jones he takes ever safety precaution.
“At first I was nervous because I was like, ‘Was [Jones] joking?'” Cooks told Todd Archer of ESPN. “So when I saw him, I go, ‘Oh no worries, I’ll be flying your plane next.’ We just laughed about it, right?
“But I did tell him, ‘Look, don’t worry. I had a co-pilot with me. I’m not going around just taking guys up by myself.’ Although I’m very comfortable doing that, I think just out of respect for guys and their families, it is just smart. I always say, ‘Hey, that extra set of eyes.'”
Cooks is a licensed pilot and owns his own aircraft. He often makes social media posts from his flights, including one last year that featured teammates Micah Parsons and Stephon Gilmore along for the ride.
Jones commented after seeing the video, saying he felt “part-time pilots, in my mind, are not the way to go.”
“One thing I want to do is chastise Cooks for getting in that airplane with the best part of the team and flying up there with them, looking around Seattle,” Jones said. “Boy, I’m glad I didn’t know that was going on. But I would have to tell him part-time pilots, in my mind, are not the way to go.”
Jones’ comments were made somewhat facetiously but also likely with an air of truth, given Parsons if the anchor of the Cowboys’ defense.
Cooks’ interest in flying has also reportedly infected the Cowboys’ locker room, with several teammates expressing interest in flying with the wideout or getting a license of their own. It’s likely Jones blood pressure will rise reading that alone, but the fact that Cooks has a more experienced co-pilot with him at all times should assuage concerns.
