Colorado head coach Deion Sanders couldn’t let Jay Norvell and Colorado State have the last laugh in Saturday’s rivalry game.

“I said we can’t let this dude win,” Sanders told reporters of the message he conveyed to his players midway through their 43-35 double-overtime victory. “There ain’t no way we let this dude win. This press conference is going to be unbearable if we let this dude win.”

Norvell, the Rams’ head coach, ratcheted up the tensions between the two schools when he took a jab at Sanders’ sartorial choices.

Norvell had said he makes a point to remove his hat and sunglasses when he’s speaking with “grown-ups.” He explained how “that’s what my mother taught me.”

Sanders wasted little time pouncing on the remark and citing it in a motivational speech to his team. Calling the comments “bulljunk,” he said Norvell “mess(ed) around and made it personal.”

Coach Prime also gifted a pair of sunglasses to each of his players.

This week, CSU coach Jay Norvell said that he “takes his glasses and hat off” when talking to adults.

Some fans thought Norvell poked the bear and would incur the wrath of a motivated Buffaloes squad.

Instead, Colorado State carried a 21-14 lead into halftime and was ahead inside the final minute of the game before Jimmy Horn Jr.’s 45-yard touchdown catch. Shedeur Sanders and Michael Harrison combined for the two-point conversion to tie the game with 36 seconds left in regulation.

Harrison’s 18-yard touchdown grab in the second overtime was the decisive score after the Colorado defense denied the Rams offense on fourth down.

After the game, Sanders brought his mother, Connie, into the locker room to partake in the Buffaloes’ celebrations.

The Hall of Fame cornerback told reporters he has moved on from his war of words with Norvell and is looking ahead to Colorado’s next game. A tough road test against Oregon is ahead on Sept. 23.

Luckily for college football fans, Colorado State hosts the Buffaloes next season, which is bound to reignite the drama between the in-state rivals.
