The latest psychological thriller on Hulu, A Murder at the End of the World, has been shot in several different locations to create the unique, eerie vibe in the film.
The film is a murder mystery focusing on a budding detective, Darby Harr, who is also a true-crime writer and an experienced hacker. Darby receives an invitation to visit the isolated house of a billionaire, Andy Ronson, along with 8 other guests.
The eerie, isolated atmosphere seems interesting to Derby in the beginning, but things change quickly when she realizes it could be the setting for a potential murder. Moreover, one of the guests in the house turns out to be Darby’s previous detective partner.
Co-directed by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, the film includes their signature style of sensibilities and some unique, isolated filming locations that contribute to the atmosphere of the film.
The Murder at the End of the World has been shot in various locations, including many sites in New Jersey, Utah, Iceland, and New York City. A significant portion of the film was shot in various locations across New Jersey and Iceland.
Here is a list of all the locations where A Murder at the End of the World has been shot!
Tribeca, New York City
The show begins with a scene featuring Darby reading The Silver Doe. The opening scene was shot in a real-life bookstore located in the Tribeca neighborhood in New York City.
The scene is beautifully shot in a shop that claims to be the “oldest mystery specialist bookstore in America” and goes well with the mysterious theme of the film. We see Darby waiting in the sop, surrounded by big bookshelves full of detective novels and thrillers, which sets the tone of the film.
I. Hanksville and Green River, Utah
The scenes set in The Whispering Sands Motel and Ray’s Tavern are shot in Hanksville and Green River in Utah, respectively, as per Production List.
The motel is a real one near the Goblin Valley State Park and is an important location in the film. The motel plays an important role in Darby and Bill’s backstory involving the hunt for a serial killer.

On the other hand, Ray’s Tavern is a real watering hole in Green River. In the film, it is the place where Darby and Bill first met in person. The Utah mountains further contribute to building up the eerie atmosphere in the film.
II. New Jersey
Many of the important scenes in the film are shot in various locations across New Jersey, including Newark, Readington, and Rockaway.
In the film, Darby lives in a warehouse-turned-apartment. The original building is located at 407 Mulberry Street in Newark. The brick warehouse is an apt shooting location because of its noir aesthetics and dark vibe.

The building includes many shadows, alleys, and dungeons, all symbolic of the dark theme and setting of the film. However, the interior of Darby’s apartment was probably shot in a studio.
In episode 2 of the series, we see a glimpse of Darby’s childhood home and farmhouse, both of which are also located in New Jersey. As per the local newspaper, My Central Jersey, some of Darby’s childhood scenes were shot at the Readington River Buffalo Farm. However, the location of Darby’s childhood home has not been specified, but it is likely also to be somewhere in New Jersey.
In fact, most of the flashback sequences in the film are shot in New Jersey. For instance, there’s a scene in episode 2 of the series where Darby rides her bike down the train tracks and an empty road, which was shot in New Jersey. You can spot a glimpse of the Mill Lane Tavern, a family-owned restaurant and bar in Rockaway, New Jersey.
III. Iceland
After receiving the invitation from the mysterious billionaire, Darby and the other guests travel to Iceland. As is evident from the singular landscapes, the scenes set in Iceland were shot in Iceland in reality, apart from a few exceptions.
As per Vanity Fair, in one scene, the guests drive across the famous Kolgrafafjordur Sword Bridge, situated on the Snæfellsnesvegur Peninsula. We can also catch a glimpse of the Mulagong tunnel, verifying that the scenes were indeed shot in Iceland.
Andy’s remote home is also located in Iceland and is modeled on a real-life hotel in the Fljot Valley in northern Iceland called Deplar Farm. It is an expensive and luxurious hotel offering several facilities, such as breathtaking views of the Aurora Borealis, heli-skiing, and geothermal pools.

Although the luxury hotel inspired the location and interior of Andy’s retreat, the exterior shots of his mansion were created by CGI.
