Ford recorded for the first time in a while positive sales in the pony car department as the Mustang outsold its rivals, the Chevrolet Camaro and the Dodge Challenger.
The American automaker recorded 48,605 deliveries in the United States of America. Of course, said total comprises more examples of the S550 than the seventh-gen ‘Stang. In second place, Dodge’s muscle car tallied 44,960 deliveries in its home market, which is 18 percent down on the 55,060 delivered in 2022. The Camaro ended 2023 with 31,028 deliveries in the United States, improving 25.9 percent over the 24,652 deliveries for 2022. That’s 2,585.666 cars on average per month, as opposed to 3,746.666 for the Challenger and 4,050.416 for the Mustang.
The Mustang is traditionally the fastest horse in the sales race, and it’s still ahead if you count sales of the Mustang Mach-E electric crossover as a muscle car competitor. Mach-E sales were up 3.3% in 2023 as Ford moved 40,771 of them. That’s the closest the Mach-E has been to its gas-powered sibling since the start of sales in 2021.
The last Challenger rolled off the assembly line on Friday, December 22. It was a pitch-black SRT Demon 170. In mid-December, Chevrolet produced the final Camaro, a ZL1 1LE with a manual. The Ford might now stand alone, but Chevy has already teased that the Camaro name will return one day in some capacity, and Dodge is already showcasing a next-generation Charger, which we hope leads to a new Challenger.
