July 9: LHP José Alvarado (left elbow inflammation) placed on 15-day IL; RHP Andrew Bellatti recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley
The Phillies’ bullpen took a hit on Sunday, as Alvarado has been stellar this season. The left-hander has a 1.38 ERA with 39 strikeouts and just nine walks in 26 innings. The Phillies have won 20 of the 26 games in which he’s appeared. This is his second stint on the IL for left elbow inflammation in 2023.
Bellatti, who has pitched in 15 games for the Phillies this season, had a 1.20 ERA in Triple-A with a 16/3 K/BB ratio in 15 innings.
LHP José Alvarado (left elbow inflammation)
Expected return: TBD
Having a career season with a 1.38 ERA and 6 saves, left-hander Alvarado is on the shelf for the second time this season due to elbow inflammation. (Last updated: July 9)
RHP Seranthony Domínguez (left oblique strain)
Expected return: After the All-Star break
Domínguez is scheduled to throw another bullpen session on July 8 in Miami. He threw 20-25 pitches in a bullpen session at Tropicana Field on July 5. At some point, Domínguez will require a rehab assignment, but Phillies manager Rob Thomson expects him to return before the end of July. (Last updated: July 7)
RHP Andrew Painter (sprained UCL in right elbow)
Expected return: Possibly second half
The Phillies said they received better news than expected on July 8, when the results of an MRI showed Painter’s injured UCL is healing as expected. Painter will rest for a few days and be re-evaluated after the All-Star break. If the soreness in his elbow is gone, he could resume his throwing program. Painter had been scheduled to throw to live hitters last week in Clearwater, Fla., but he started to feel discomfort in the elbow. There remains hope that Painter will pitch in games this season, if not for the Phillies, then for a Minor League affiliate. (Last updated: July 9)
RHP Noah Song (back tightness)
Expected return: TBD
Song struck out one and allowed one hit and two walks in one scoreless inning for Single-A Clearwater on July 7. His fastball touched 92.4 mph. Song has allowed one run in 4 2/3 innings in four rehab appearances. He has struck out seven and walked five. Song, a Rule 5 Draft pick, must be added to the Phillies’ 26-man roster by July 28. He will need to be on the active roster for at least 90 days this season to remain with the organization, although that 90-day total can carry through the beginning of next season. (Last updated: July 7)
1B Rhys Hoskins (torn left ACL)
Expected return: Possibly the postseason
Hoskins underwent reconstructive surgery on March 30 in Fort Worth, Texas, to repair a torn ACL in his left knee. He was given a timetable of seven to nine months, which effectively ended his 2023 regular season. Hoskins, however, could put himself in play for the postseason, if the Phillies qualify and make another deep postseason run. Teammate Kyle Schwarber did exactly that with the Cubs in 2016.
Hoskins sustained the injury while attempting to track down a high chopper to first base in a March 23 Spring Training game against the Tigers. The 30-year-old Hoskins is set to become a free agent after the season. (Last updated: June 8)
