Fighting game esports are in a bit of a resurgence right now, with multiple orgs expanding their rosters. There have been new Cloud9 Tekken signings along with FaZe adding to their roster. Smash Bros isn’t driving that growth though, with the demise of its two major circuits still looming over this year. Despite the reduced prize money kicking around the game right now, a few orgs are still expanding their work in the game. One of the biggest moves recently has been Luminosity sponsoring free agent Smash players.
Under a new sponsorship system, Luminosity has decided to start paying for more players to travel to tournaments. On top of maintaining a decent roster for fighting game esports, they’ll now be helping free agent players continue to compete too This is what the sponsorship means and how it’s going to help keep players active in more tournaments.
Luminosity Gaming has just announced a new collaboration with Metafy. They’re launching a new type of sponsorship imitative. They’re going to be directly sponsoring players active in Smash Bros Ultimate. After some turmoil in the game last year, there are a good few players currently without an org who are at the highest level of the game. Cody Schwab is a notable example but there’s quite a few more out there.
These free agent Smash players will help these players continue to attend tournaments and get exposure as players by competing under Luminosity. While not fully attached to the org, this new Luminosity free agent sponsorships are a great way of getting more players to tournaments and supported in Smash Bros.
As part of our partnership with @Luminosity, we’re happy to announce that we’ll be providing a full trip to GOML 2024 for the highest placing free agent in Melee this weekend. ✈️
Best of luck to everyone competing, we can’t wait to see you there! 😎 pic.twitter.com/WVQHipRLKH

The collaboration is kicking off with the upcoming Get on my Level 2023 tournament. The first player to get featured is whoever places highest in Melee as a free agent! (Probably Cody Schwab) This new initiative from Luminosity is a great way of ensuring even more players can continue competing in Smash Bros.
