Nashville, Tennesee, received more than a year’s worth of snow in only one day when a winter storm passed through the region on Monday.
An arctic blast brought frigid temperatures, bone-chilling winds and heavy snow to much of the United States over the weekend and on Monday. Nashville residents woke up to a thick blanket of snow and likely more to come later this week.
“Nashville’s official snowfall accumulation was 7.6″ …” the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Nashville posted on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday. “Of that total, 6.3″ occurred yesterday, breaking the daily snowfall record for January 15. Normal annual snowfall is 4.7″, so we received more than an entire winter’s worth of snow in just one event.”
NWS meteorologist Cory Mueller told Newsweek that although the snow has stopped falling, a weak system is forecast to produce a light dusting of snow overnight on Thursday.
It was the first snowfall of the season. Last year, Nashville only received 1.2 inches of snow. January is the city’s snowiest month, producing on average 2 inches of snow.
Although the snow has moved on, cold weather persists in the area. Nashville’s NWS office warned on X that there was a high probability of subzero temperatures overnight on Tuesday in the south and east of Nashville. The city will remain under a wind chill advisory until Wednesday morning.
“For the Wind Chill Advisory, very cold wind chills expected,” the NWS advisory said. “Wind chills as low as 15 below zero this morning and again tonight.”
The advisory urged motorists to plan for slippery road conditions and warned people of the dangers that accompanied the severe cold.
“The cold wind chills could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken,” the advisory said. “Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.”

AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kines previously told Newsweek that he expected as much as 60 percent of the United States could be covered with snow at the same time because of the flurry of storms that impacted the nation.
In addition to Tennessee, several Midwestern states, including eastern Iowa, northern Illinois, and southern Wisconsin, saw up to 10 inches of snowfall on Friday evening in a winter storm so big that it could be seen from space.
The storm also brought measurable snowfall to New York City on Monday night, which is the Big Apple’s first snowfall of more than an inch in over 700 days.
