NFL Week 8 injury report: Buccaneers’ Baker Mayfield, Chris Godwin questionable, but expected to face Bills
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Injuries are unfortunately a reality in the NFL, and all 32 clubs have had to weather health-related storms through seven weeks. Deshaun Watson is still dealing with a shoulder injury, Ryan Tannehill could miss significant time with an ankle injury suffered in London, Daniel Jones hasn’t played in a couple weeks due to a neck issue and the San Francisco 49ers have several banged-up stars.

Let’s take a look at the injuries around the NFL. Below, we will break down the final injury report for Thursday night’s matchup between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Buffalo Bills, and the midweek injury reports for the other 28 NFL teams set to play on Sunday.

Odds courtesy of Caesars Sportsbook

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Buffalo Bills (-8.5)

Buccaneers: OG Matt Feiler (knee), S Kaevon Merriweather (ankle) OUT; WR Chris Godwin (neck), QB Baker Mayfield (knee), DT Vita Vea (groin) QUESTIONABLE

Bills: TE Dawson Knox (wrist), LB Baylon Spector (hamstring), TE Quintin Morris (ankle) OUT; DT Ed Oliver (toe) QUESTIONABLE

For the Bucs, Godwin is questionable with a neck injury, but he was a full participant in practice on Wednesday. Mayfield has described his knee issue as something that just requires pain tolerance, and he is officially listed as questionable to play despite being limited on Tuesday, and a full participant on Wednesday. Vea’s outlook appears to be a bit more bleak, as he did not practice at all this week. NFL Media is reporting that Godwin and Mayfield will suit up.

Not too many surprises on the Bills’ injury report this week. Knox will be out indefinitely due to wrist surgery, and Morris did not practice all week. Oliver was a limited participant in practice all week with a toe injury. Star quarterback Josh Allen was listed on the injury report with a right shoulder injury, but he was a full participant every day.

New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins (-9.5)

Defensive end Keion White was the only Patriot who missed practice Wednesday, as he sat out with a concussion. Offensive tackle Calvin Anderson (illness), defensive tackle Christian Barmore (knee), offensive tackle Trent Brown (ankle/knee), defensive tackle Davon Godchaux (ankle), tight end Hunter Henry (ankle), wide receiver Ty Montgomery (knee), offensive guard Cole Strange (knee), linebacker Josh Uche (ankle/toe), cornerback Shaun Wade (shoulder) and defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. (shoulder) were limited participants.

The Dolphins had a lengthy injury report. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill (hip), safety Jevon Holland (concussion), fullback Alec Ingold (foot) and running back Raheem Mostert (ankle) missed practice on Wednesday. Wide receiver River Cracraft (shoulder), cornerback Xavien Howard (groin), cornerback Kader Kohou (neck), defensive back Nik Needham (Achilles), cornerback Jalen Ramsey (knee), cornerback Cam Smith (foot), wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (back) and offensive lineman Connor Williams (groin) were limited participants.

Dallas Cowboys (-6.5) at Los Angeles Rams

All Cowboys were healthy at practice. Defensive back Juanyeh Thomas was the only player listed on the injury report, as he was a full participant with a hamstring injury.

Head coach Sean McVay said that defensive tackle Larrell Murchison, linebacker Ernest Jones, linebacker Byron Young, safety Russ Yeast and receiver Ben Skowronek were all limited on Wednesday, but added that he doesn’t expect their injuries to affect their availability for Sunday’s game. Tackle Joe Noteboom, who had been recovering from a groin injury, was not limited, per McVay.

New York Giants at New York Jets (-3)

Running back Gary Brightwell (hamstring injury) was the only Giant who did not practice Wednesday. Running back Saquon Barkley (elbow), kicker Graham Gano (left knee), cornerback Adoree’ Jackson (neck), quarterback Daniel Jones (neck), offensive tackle Evan Neal (ankle), center John Michael Schmitz (shoulder), pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux (knee), left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring) and tight end Darren Waller (hamstring) were limited participants.

For the Jets, wide receiver Randall Cobb (shoulder) and offensive guard Joe Tippmann (quadriceps) did not practice. Offensive tackle Mekhi Becton (knee), cornerback Michael Carter II (hamstring) and wide receiver Irvin Charles (shoulder) were limited participants. In good news, cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed were full participants after recently suffering concussions.

Indianapolis Colts (-1) New Orleans Saints

Cornerback JuJu Brents (quad), tight end Kylen Granson (concussion), defensive tackle Eric Johnson II (ankle), running back Zack Moss (elbow/heel) and offensive tackle Braden Smith (hip/wrist) did not practice for the Colts on Wednesday.

Saints offensive lineman James Hurst (ankle) and star running back Alvin Kamara (illness) did not practice. Tight end Juwan Johnson (calf), defensive back J.T. Gray (hamstring), offensive tackle Landon Young (hip), offensive tackle Ryan Ramczyk (concussion), linebacker Demario Davis (knee), safety Tyrann Mathieu (foot), safety Marcus Maye (hamstring) and quarterback Taysom Hill (chest) were limited participants.

Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings (PICK)

Running back Aaron Jones (hamstring), tight end Luke Musgrave (ankle), and guard Josh Myers (ankle) did not practice in the Packers’ opening session of the week. Corner Jaire Alexander (back), linebacker De’Vondre Campbell (ankle), guard Elgton Jenkins (knee), tackle Yosh Nijman (knee), and defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt (knee) were all limited.

With the Vikings, they did not hold an official practice on Wednesday, so their injury report is an estimation. That said, the team listed tight end T.J. Hockenson (foot) and linebacker Brian Asamoah II (ankle) as nonparticipants. Guard Ezra Cleveland (foot) and receiver Jalen Nailor (hamstring) were limited.

Houston Texans (-3) at Carolina Panthers

Texans defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins (knee) and wide receiver Robert Woods (foot) missed practice on Wednesday. Tight end Brevin Jordan (foot), offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil (knee) and defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway (calf) were limited participants. Wide receiver Tank Dell (concussion) returned to practice as a full participant.

Safety Vonn Bell (quadriceps), wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. (ankle) and tight end Stephen Sullivan (illness) did not practice for the Panthers. Carolina had several players listed as limited participants, including offensive guard Austin Corbett (knee), linebacker Frankie Luvu (hip), right tackle Taylor Moton (knee) and safety Xavier Woods (hamstring). Running back Miles Sanders returned to practice as a full participant with his shoulder issue.

Philadelphia Eagles (-6.5) at Washington Commanders

Cornerback Bradley Roby was the only Eagle who did not practice Wednesday, as he sat out with a shoulder injury. Defensive tackle Milton Williams was limited with a heel injury, while safety Reed Blankenship was a full participant with his rib issue.

For the Commanders, linebacker Cody Barton (ankle), offensive guard Saahdiq Charles (calf) and wide receiver Curtis Samuel (foot) did not practice. Offensive lineman Sam Cosmi (hip) and tight end Cole Turner (ankle) were limited participants.

Jacksonville Jaguars (-2.5) Pittsburgh Steelers

Jaguars wide receiver Zay Jones sat out of practice with a knee injury. Cornerback Tyson Campbell (hamstring), safety Andre Cisco (hamstring), quarterback Trevor Lawrence (knee), offensive tackle Walker Little (knee) and offensive guard Brandon Scherff (ankle) were limited participants.

For the Steelers, offensive guard Nate Herbig (illness) and defensive back Levi Wallace (foot) missed practice.

Atlanta Falcons (-2.5) at Tennessee Titans

Falcons linebacker Tae Davis missed practice Wednesday, as he is in the concussion protocol.

For the Titans, quarterback Ryan Tannehill (ankle) and rookie tight end Josh Whyle (concussion) did not practice. Center Aaron Brewer (neck) and cornerback Roger McCreary (hamstring) were limited participants. Titans fans will be happy to hear wide receiver Treylon Burks (knee) and defensive tackle Teair Tart (toe) were full participants.

Cleveland Browns at Seattle Seahawks (-3.5)

The Browns had a number of players absent from practice Wednesday, including Deshaun Watson. He has already been ruled out for Week 8 due to a shoulder injury and P.J. Walker will again start. Along with Watson, running back Jerome Ford (ankle), Marquise Goodwin (back), running back Kareem Hunt (thigh), tight end David Njoku (knee), and linebacker Sione Takitaki (hamstring) missed practice due to injury. Defensive end Ogbo Okoronkwo (ribs), linebacker Anthony Walker (shoulder) and offensive tackle Jedrick Wills (foot, ankle) were limited.

The Seahawks held out guard Phil Haynes (calf), receiver Tyler Lockett (hamstring), linebacker Bobby Wagner (ankle), running back Kenneth Walker III (calf), and linebacker Uchenna Nwosu (pectoral) of Wednesday’s practice due to injury. Nwosu’s pectoral injury is season-ending, so he will soon head to IR. Meanwhile, DK Metcalf (ribs, hip) was a full participant at practice after missing last week’s game.

Baltimore Ravens (-8.5) at Arizona Cardinals

Baltimore was missing three players from Wednesday’s opening practice: Running back Keaton Mitchell (hamstring), linebacker Roquan Smith (shoulder), and safety Marcus Williams (hamstring). Cornerback Kevon Seymour (ankle) was limited.

The most notable injury news for the Cardinals surround quarterback Kyler Murray, who was a full participant at practice as he continues to recover from a torn ACL he suffered last season. The club opened up his practice window last week and it does seem like he is nearing a return. Meanwhile, linebacker Krys Barnes (hamstring), defensive lineman Kevin Strong (shoulder), and offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson (neck) each did not practice. Corner Antonio Hamilton (groin), wideout Zach Pascal (neck) and safety Jalen Thompson (hamstring) were all limited.

Kansas City Chiefs (-7.5) at Denver Broncos

Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton was not at practice Wednesday due to his wrist injury, as he’s expected to miss roughly two months. Safety Mike Edwards (elbow), running back Jerick McKinnon (groin) and wide receiver Justin Watson (elbow) were full participants.

Denver was without running back Dwayne Washington at practice due to a knee injury while safety Justin Simmons (hip) was limited.

Cincinnati Bengals at San Francisco 49ers (-5.5)

Linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither (knee) was the only Bengal who did not practice Wednesday. Offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. (groin) was limited.

The 49ers were without quarterback Brock Purdy on Wednesday as Kyle Shanahan told reporters that he is in concussion protocol. If he is unable to clear protocol, Sam Darnold would get the start for San Francisco. On top of Purdy, the Niners were without tackle Trent Williams (ankle) and receiver Deebo Samuel (shoulder) at practice. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw was given a rest day.

Chicago Bears at Los Angeles Chargers (-8.5)

For Chicago, safety Jaquan Brisker (illness), offensive guard Nate Davis (ankle), quarterback Justin Fields (thumb), defensive back Terell Smith (illness) and offensive tackle Darnell Wright (shoulder/toe) did not practice Wednesday. Safety Eddie Jackson (foot) and offensive tackle Braxton Jones (neck) were limited participants.

The Chargers were without tight end Gerald Everett due to a hip injury and wideout Joshua Palmer because of a knee injury. Linebacker Khalil Mack also did not practice Wednesday, but he was simply given a rest day. Safety Alohi Gilman (heel), receiver Jalen Guyton (knee), defensive back Deane Leonard (hamstring), defensvie lineman Otito Ogbonnia (knee), and tackle Trey Pipkins III (ankle) were all limited.
