Samsung’s latest update to its Quick Share file-sharing service brings integration with Google’s native Android Nearby Share. The update is now rolling out to a number of Samsung devices but it’s not all good news.

As reported a few weeks ago, Samsung is merging its file-sharing service, Quick Share, with Google’s Android-wide Nearby Share. The new Quick Share update is now rolling out to a slew of Samsung’s premium devices, both current and previous gen.

I received the Quick Share update on my Galaxy S21 Ultra. A similar update should be available to all Galaxy S21, S22, and S23 models on the Galaxy Store, with the S24 series seemingly shipping with it out of the box.

What’s new:

By integrating Google Nearby Share, Quick Share supports Content Sharing with nearby third-party Android devicesIncreased upload limit per file when creating QR codes and using share to contacts (3 GB – 5 GB)#

On paper, this update is supposed to grant Samsung devices AirDrop-esque file-sharing compatibility with all Android devices, with Quick Share being a superior service to Google’s Nearby Share in terms of speed and connectivity.

Sadly, though, the update doesn’t seem to do much. Right now, at least. After updating the app on my Galaxy S21 Ultra, all attempts at finding either of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro on hand, proved futile. It’s likely that will change as Google updates those devices, however.

It’s worth mentioning that Quick Share is now also available on Windows.
