Was listening to Kelly and Anna’s chat about Bravely Default 2, and I wanted to add in my two cents, if that’s okay…
(If not, feel free to skip this)

Get Freelancer on all four characters to Rank 12 ASAP!

Between the two JP Ups which do indeed stack, they also get “Purge” to rid your party of status effects like berserk and Doom, among others, “Square One” which will remove all the buffs from enemies (that was a godsend against Orpheus the Bard and his constant buffing of enemies), and “Body Slam” which does unholy amounts of damage for the cost of 1BP and keeps getting stronger as you level. Where I’m at, I’m doing, on average, 1500 HP damage per “Body Slam” and 2200+ HP if it crits. I can go through whole dungeons with everyone having Freelancer as their sub-job and just one or two shoting every normal enemy with “Body Slam.” Have every character Brave once, do two Body Slams, and every monster in a normal encounter is usually dead by the time everyone gets a turn, if not sooner. And that’s me playing on Normal and it hasn’t failed me yet and I’m part way into Ch 2 having gotten two new jobs from the story and, I think, about to get a third.
Not an effective strategy on bosses, to have all four with Miscellany, but I always keep at least one party member with it and they usually end up being my MVP.

I wonder if the Shin Megami Tensei anime you were talking about is either Shin Megami Tensei: Tokyo Revelation or Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei. SMT: Tokyo Revelation is an OAV that isn’t based on any game in particular, although the plot is pretty similar to Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei. This was actually released domestically in the US by Manga Entertainment as “Tokyo Revelation.”

Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei is an OAV adaptation of the first novel by the same name, the one that gave rise to the entire franchise. That one was never released in the US, but I believe it was released in the UK and maybe some other countries in Europe, too.

Anyway, as for the Questions of the Week, I’ll tell you about the time I fell for such a story hook, line, and sinker. Sometime in 1999, I was told by a classmate that Yoshi from the Mario franchise was a secret Pokemon. Maybe it’s because I was 12, but it made sense to me at the time that another Nintendo character would be made into a hidden Pokemon.

I still remember the directions he told me: trade one Dratini for another between Red and Blue version. Both games needed to have 150 Pokemon caught in the Pokedex. Train that Dratini until it evolved into Dragonite and make sure the Dratini in the other version has also evolved. After that, trade them back and take the Dragonite to the Cerulean Cave and go back to the island Mewtwo used to stand on. Use a Fire Stone on the Dragonite and it will evolve Yoshi. I did all of that and sure enough, neither my Dragonite nor my sister’s evolved into Yoshi.

Unsurprisingly, I become way more skeptical after that. Years later, I would find out this Dragonite into Yoshi rumor originated as an April Fool’s Day prank in the April 1999 issue of Exper Gamer magazine. I’m fairly positive this kid was laughing behind my back when I told him I tried it and it didn’t work.
