Seven people have been taken to hospital after a fire broke out on a Bouygues UK construction site in east London.
Emergency crews were called at around 8.30am on Tuesday to the Hallsville Quarter regeneration site in Canning Town, where a ground floor commercial unit was on fire.
Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters put out the fire an hour later and rescued a person using a 13.5 metre ladder. The London Fire Brigade said a 64-metre ladder was also used as part of its response.
Paramedics treated 10 people for smoke inhalation, seven of whom were then taken to hospital while three were discharged at the scene.
The London Fire Brigade said it is now investigating the cause of the fire. The Health and Safety Executive also said it is making enquiries.
A Bouygues spokesperson said: “The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing so we are unable to draw any conclusions at this time.”
The contractor started building the fourth of five phases of its £600m regeneration scheme in April. The scheme will provide 375 student accommodation rooms across a 10-storey building. It expected to complete the project by summer 2026, in time for the 2026/27 academic year.
Hallsville Quarter is being developed by Linkcity, Bougyues UK’s development arm. The first three phases have already been built, providing around 1,150 homes alongside more than 8,500 square metres of commercial space, a 7,500 square metre supermarket, 3,000 square metres of amenity space and a new health centre.
