Chrysler’s parent company, Stellantis, recalls about 24,000 plug-in hybrid minivans worldwide due to the risk of fire. It has urged owners to park the vehicles outdoors and away from buildings while they wait for repairs.
“Stellantis” stated that the recall refers to the “Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid” model produced from 2017 to 2021. The decision covers about 19,500 vehicles in the US.
The company is aware of seven incidents that occurred when the vehicles were turned off, some of which occurred while the battery was being charged. Four customers reported smoke inhalation symptoms. Stelantis said the events are linked to abnormalities in individual high-voltage battery cells, but they rarely occur.
The risk of fire is reduced when the battery’s charge level is lower, so van owners have been advised to refrain from charging. The company is working on software updates to detect abnormalities, and, if found, dealers will replace the vehicle’s high-voltage battery.
