April 21 (UPI) — Police are investigating a shooting on the campus of Delaware State University that left an 18-year-old woman dead early Sunday, officials said.
Dover police are working with officers from Delaware State University in the investigation of the shooting, which took place about 1:40 a.m. near Warren-Franklin Hall, a dormitory on campus, authorities said in a statement.
University police received a call reporting shots fired, and officers said they found the woman with a gunshot wound to her upper body, according to the Dover Police statement.
The woman, who was not publicly identified, was not a student of the university and was reportedly a resident of Wilmington, which is about 50 miles north of Delaware State University, police said.
“Officers rendered aid to the victim and she was transported to Bayhealth Kent Campus for treatment,” police said in the statement. “Tragically, the 18-year-old died at the hospital as a result of her injuries.”
Dover Police have launched a homicide investigation, and officers are cooperating with Delaware State University Police on the incident, officials said.
“The DSU Police Department and staff will continue to take all necessary actions to ensure the health and well-being of our campus community,” police said.
Authorities have made counseling services available in the Tubman Laws Hall housing office. The campus remains closed Sunday and events have been canceled, with police patrols increased.
