UPDATE: Ultimate Cup August to September Ban List

UPDATE: Ultimate Cup August to September Ban List
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Digimon’s Ultimate Cup format and its controversial mono-color format has been in full swing this year. The format, which was once the testing ground for the now officially adopted mulligan rule, has also been used to try new bans in its restricted format. The new ban list was announced on June 30th. This coincides with the EX04 and unreleased (at the time of writing) BT13 launch windows.

What’s next on the ban list?

The announcement confirms that the event will continue to adhere to single color deckbuilding. The Digimon that were limited to 1 initially in the Ultimate Cup Digimon ban list such as EX2 Impmon, Promo WereGarurumon and GranKuwagamon have been removed from the Ultimate cup limited list. They are now globally limited to 1.

BT9 WereGarurumon (X Antibody) was released from the limited list back up to 4 copies, now that the problematic combo piece has been limited. The full limited list in addition to the global ban list is:

BT11-092 Analogman
BT12-092 Marcus Damon
EX2-071 Death Slinger
EX3-045 Hydramon
ST10-14 Chaos Degredation.

The first three on the list are new additions to the limited list, joining Hydramon and Chaos Degradation. Machinedramon saw consistent results in the Ultimate Cup format thanks to the limiting of its worst matchups. The previous limit of Hydramon and EX2 Impmon allowed it to keep up with Bloomlordmon and Beelzemon.

Other meta threat “Red Hybrid” has a notoriously bad matchup into the deck. Players may need to explore other Digimon deck colors. The hit to Death Slinger serves as a means to slow down Beelzemon and the new ChaosGallantmon based mill decks. Alongside the Impmon limit, this Digimon ban list likely will see the complete falloff of Beelzemon.

The Digimon Ban List limits Marcus’ time to Shine

A surprise addition to the Digimon Ban List was BT12-092 Marcus Damon. While EX04 is the latest release, the August-September period will see the release of BT13, which adds further support to the ShineGreymon archetype. It’ll also include the new “Burst Mode” Digivolution.

This likely serves as a testing ground to see if the limit keeps ShineGreymon in check during this format, and the next going forward. The tamer heavy deck is capable of playing both reactive and proactive in its powerful “DP Minus” removal. This is due to it being able to make cheaper use of EX04 Secret Rare – ShineGreymon Ruin Mode to put up a powerful blanket effect that locks opponents out of playing to the field for a turn or greater.

Marcus was likely added to the Digimon ban list due to its unique ability to be treated as a Digimon and Tamer at the same time. He does safe, heavy damage while also allowing your Greymon line to evolve for free. One Marcus on its own can be enough to win games. This ban list limits the nightmare scenario of an army of Marcus coming for your security.

[Ultimate Cup 2023 August-September Modified Rules (Correction)]

Today we would like to share the restricted/banned list for August-September.

Hidden Potential Denied

The Digimon ban list maintains its stance on removing 3 cards fully from the format. In addition the global ban list, BT9-112 DeathXmon, BT4-086 Cerberusmon: Werewolf Mode and BT3-103 Hidden Potential Discovered! remain fully illegal to play in the format.

Other hits, such as the Marcus limit, may see transition to the global Digimon ban list. It remains to be seen if these frequently banned cards will see parity in the main ruleset.
