Recent audits conducted across Ohio’s higher education institutions reveal that The University of Toledo (UT) and Bowling Green State University (BGSU) have fallen short of complying with the state’s Science of Reading (SoR) standards. The evaluation highlighted several areas of noncompliance, specifically in curriculum alignment, instructor training, and assessment methodologies. Both universities were found lacking in comprehensive SoR-aligned coursework necessary to adequately prepare future teachers with evidence-based reading instruction techniques.

Conversely, Lourdes University received commendations for its exemplary implementation of state science of reading guidelines. Their program demonstrated:

  • Robust course offerings grounded in current literacy research
  • Mandatory professional development on SoR practices for faculty
  • Effective student assessment aligned with state standards
