The trash talk between Colorado and Colorado State now includes the mother of Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders.

Before his team’s 43-35 double-overtime victory over the Rams, Sanders addressed comments from Colorado State head coach Jay Norvell.

“He didn’t directly say something about my momma,” Sanders said. “But he alluded to the fact that his momma raised him and my momma didn’t raise me right.”

His mother, Connie, then took the mic and said, “I raised him right. I also told him to always be yourself. If you have to kick ass, kick ass!”

That sent the locker room, which included the Rock, into celebration mode:

Sanders was referencing criticism from Norvell when he said the following during his weekly radio show:

“I sat down with ESPN today. And I don’t care if they hear it in Boulder. I told them, ‘I took my hat off, and I took my glasses off.’ And I said, ‘When I talk to grownups, I take my hat and my glasses off.’ That’s what my mother taught me. They’re not going to like us no matter what we say or do. It doesn’t matter. So, let’s go up there and play.”

The trash talk was the dominant storyline going into the contest and even overshadowed the fact there was an actual game at times.

Sanders said Norvell made it personal and capitalized on the opportunity by providing his players with his own line of sunglasses:

This week, CSU coach Jay Norvell said that he “takes his glasses and hat off” when talking to adults.

For his part, Norvell said he wanted to send a message to his players with the comments:

With all the media involved with this game, not one reporter asked me about my comments. One guy got it. I wanted to send a message to our players and how we run our program.#RamGrit🐏 https://t.co/6eVUpnE4tk

It seemed to work when the game started, as it was clear Colorado State was not intimidated by the undefeated team from the Pac-12.

The Rams took a 14-7 lead in the first quarter and extended their advantage to double digits by the fourth quarter. The party seemed to be over for the Buffaloes, which would have been less than ideal timing with daunting games against Oregon and USC next on the schedule.

However, quarterback Shedeur Sanders took over in crunch time and directed a 98-yard touchdown drive in the final minutes. He found Jimmy Horn Jr. for a 45-yard score and then connected with Michael Harrison for the two-point conversion to force overtime.

Harrison caught both Colorado touchdowns in the overtime periods, and the Buffaloes remained undefeated going into Pac-12 play and celebrated even as the two head coaches shook hands:

The irony of the Norvell situation is that Colorado State did not look like a well-coached team for much of the game. It committed 17 penalties for 182 yards, which was a major reason it was unable to hold its lead despite being the better side for extended stretches of the game.

Norvell also chose to punt on 4th-and-2 in Colorado’s territory with just more than two minutes remaining instead of going for the first down to run out the clock, and the Buffaloes made him pay with the long touchdown drive. He then passed on the opportunity to go for the two-point conversion and the win when the Rams scored a touchdown in the first overtime.

In the end, it was Sanders who was celebrating.
