Calling a partner while they are out with friends could be considered a grey area—while some couples may be totally cool with it, others may not. But one woman has recently shared what happened when she called her boyfriend at midnight.
Racking up 5.9 million views so far on TikTok, Crystal Sorem, 25, (@henricksorem) can be seen lying in bed while speaking to the camera. She explained that she video-called her partner who was out with his three friends, all of whom answered the phone.
The hockey player from Edina, Minnesota, was pleasantly surprised when the men asked her about her cat’s new leash. She ends the clip by encouraging people to “dump” their partner and “get a new one – with friends that know about when your cat gets a new leash.”
Newsweek reached out to @henricksorem for comment via email. We could not verify the details of the case.
Meanwhile, Newsweek discussed the viral TikTok clip, which was posted to the social media platform earlier this week and currently has 1.6 million likes, with Georgina Sturmer, a United Kingdom-based counselor who specializes in relationships.
“When we are in a relationship, if our partner shows an interest in what we have to say, this helps us to feel secure. Secure within our relationship, that our partner values us and is interested in us. And secure in ourselves, as it helps to boost our confidence and self-esteem,” she said.
She continued: “But it’s not always that simple to really know whether we are being ‘listened to’ or whether our partner is simply going through the motions. In this instance, we learn that her partner has offered ‘proof’ that they are listening to her. And not only that, they have decided that her news is interesting enough to share with their friends. This helps to validate her feelings and leave her feeling valued within a relationship.”
Sturmer also explained that the lesson isn’t about sharing every anecdote from your partner with friends.
“It’s about how powerful and satisfying it is when our partner really listens to us,” she told Newsweek. “When they show interest in what we have to say, perhaps by contributing to the discussion or asking relevant questions – or even sharing our story with their friends.”
TikTok Users React
So far, Sorem’s TikTok video has amassed over 3,645 comments.
“His friends don’t even know I exist,” wrote one TikTok user.
Meanwhile, one comment with 16,400 likes from another user read: “I called my fiancé when he was out with friends. He answered and they all drunkenly screamed with excitement to talk to me.”
A third TikTok user wrote: “I’ve been Face-Timed by my fiancés friends at 3am cause they were wondering why I didn’t come too.”
“i think i need someone to ask about my cat and its leash,” a fourth added.
