In a distressing incident, a 33-year-old man hailing from Koparkhairane in Navi Mumbai has fallen prey to a WhatsApp-based fraud, losing a staggering Rs 43.45 lakh to fraudsters. The perpetrators had enticed the victim with the promise of substantial returns through online tasks, ultimately leaving him high and dry.

The victim’s ordeal began when he received a WhatsApp message from unknown individuals who claimed to offer a lucrative part-time opportunity involving online tasks. Blinded by the prospect of substantial earnings, he embarked on this perilous journey, unwittingly surrendering his hard-earned money. Despite depositing the colossal sum into various bank accounts as instructed, the victim never received the promised remuneration.

Law enforcement swiftly took action, registering a case against the scammers under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to “Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.” As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the case, leaving the victim grappling with the devastating financial loss.

The “online task” fraud, a pernicious trend on the rise, often attracts victims by initially requiring them to complete simple tasks, such as liking videos, alongside making nominal payments to gain their trust. Subsequently, victims are tricked into investing significant sums of money with the allure of substantial returns, only to be left empty-handed.

This incident echoes a recent case in Mumbai where a 48-year-old resident of Kharghar lost nearly Rs 18 lakh to a similar scheme. Under the need for quick and easy online earnings, scammers convinced the victim to undertake various online “tasks.” Initially, he received small sums of money as promised, but eventually, he found himself out of pocket by Rs 17.9 lakh after transferring funds to multiple accounts.

The cybercrime division of the Navi Mumbai police acted swiftly, registering a case of cheating based on the victim’s complaint. These incidents underscore the urgency of enhancing awareness and vigilance among individuals to protect themselves from falling prey to such fraudulent schemes.

Furthermore, a 66-year-old resident of Navi Mumbai also became a victim of the “online task” scam, losing a substantial sum of Rs 17 lakh while attempting to supplement his income through these dubious online activities.

These alarming cases serve as stark reminders of the ever-evolving tactics employed by fraudsters in the digital realm. Authorities and individuals alike must remain vigilant and informed to thwart the nefarious intentions of those who seek to exploit innocent victims for monetary gain.
