5 Highly-Rated SAW Movies That Shaped The Franchise

On the eve of the return of the Jigsaw Killer, we take a look at what made the franchise what it is today

The Jigsaw killer is back! Lionsgate and PVRINOX Pictures released the 10th instalment of the popular franchise a couple of weeks back. With it still dialling up the creepy factor in theatres, we’ve taken a look at five of the other movies in the franchise that made the series what it is today.

SAW (2004)

The first movie is where it all began for director James Wan and the SAW series, laying an unnerving foundation that is still considered to be a cult classic today.

SAW II (2005)

While the second movie saw the director’s chair replaced by Darren Lynn Bousman, the horror factor of the franchise reached a new high,  with deadly puzzles and nerve-wracking traps. Not to mention, the cat-and-mouse game between Jigsaw and Detective Eric Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg) adds an extra layer of tension.

After a hiatus of nearly four years, the third movie directed by Kevin Greutert delved deeper into the moral themes of the franchise. The movie explores Jigsaw’s philosophy about the value of life through a series of complex traps. It’s a thought-provoking instalment that challenges the viewers’ perception of right and wrong.

SAW IV (2007)

Director Darren Lynn Bousman returns again to give the audience a glimpse into Jigsaw’s backstory and the events that shaped him into the twisted serial killer that still scares the audiences today. Detective Rigg (Lyriq Bent) takes centre stage as he races against time to save the latest victims in Jigsaw’s deadly game.

SAW III (2006)

But it’s the third movie in the franchise which brings a more emotional depth to the series, again directed by Darren Lynn Bousman. SAW III sees Jigsaw’s protege, Amanda (Shawnee Smith) kidnapping a doctor to keep him alive while a grieving father (Angus Macfadyen) goes through a series of gruesome tests. The film explores themes of redemption and revenge, making it one of the most charged entries in the franchise.
