Firefighters rescued a dog who got stuck under a fence in Stittsville Friday afternoon Photo by Ottawa Fire Services
Firefighters were dashing through the streets of the capital overnight using old-fashioned muscle power and special equipment for “back-to-back animal rescues.”
First up was Stittsville’s own ‘Luna,’ a dog that was apparently checking out what was going on on the other side of the fence.

“At approx. 16:31, we received a call from a dog owner who reported their dog got stuck under a fence and was yelping in pain in the 0-100 block of Lone Meadow Trail,” firefighters explained on social media.

The rescuers used pieces of wood to “crib” the fence to prevent it from falling down further on the dog. They were then able to use a pry bar to lift the whole fence off the dog’s neck.
Luna was checked and is doing well, firefighters said.

A few hours later, a family on Barrhaven’s Fenwick Way called for help freeing their trapped cat.
This case was more complicated. ‘Zoro’ was stuck in the actuator motor that controls the reclining function of family couch.
“When we arrived the family had the couch turned upside down for us to access the cat,” OFS noted on social media.

The rescue crew from Station 47 took apart the engine that held the screw jack that the cat’s tail was stuck in.
To free the feline, firefighters turned the screw in the opposite direction that initially got the tail caught and safely freed the cat at 7:42 p.m.
Zoro was reportedly in good spirits.
