BBC Strictly’s Claudia Winkleman reveals ‘secret struggle’ with ‘a couple of operations’

Popular Strictly Come Dancing and Traitors host Claudia Winkleman has opened up about a health struggle that has left her needing surgery.

The 51 year old star revealed in a candid chat with podcaster Elizabeth Day that she was born with chronically poor eyesight – and it affects her daily life.

She said: “I was born with -15 sight so I’ve never really been able to see my face. It’s all guesswork.”

But Claudia, who shares children Jake, 20, Matilda, 17, and Arthur, 12, with husband Kris Thykier, also reckons that she likes life being a bit blurry.

“I’ve always had terrible eyesight. Which is going back to the blurriness of the paintings I like and the blurriness of how I really like life to be. Which is no overhead lights – the 17th century is where I would have absolutely smashed it,” she joked.

Before she took steps to correct her vision, Claudia revealed: “I was just banging into walls, but now I wear lenses or glasses or whatever.”

Claudia also confessed that she had had operations on her eyes but they didn’t work. She added: “Everything is “ish.” It’s just a vague idea which is how I like to live.”

The condition that the presenter has is called Myopia, also known as near-sightedness, which means that objects close-up appear clear but those further away are blurry.

Sufferers like Claudia sometimes have to squint to see things clearly – something viewers see her do on the television.

Claudia married her film producer husband at Marylebone Town Hall in 2000 in a secret ceremony.

Kris boasts a successful career and is known for his work on movies such as Woman in Gold, Kick-Ass, The Debt and the Tolkien film. He was also the executive producer on the hit 2017 TV show Riviera.

Claudia and Kris reportedly live in Connaught Village in West London with their three children.

The star previously spoke about living in London with her family, telling the Evening Standard: “I can leave my house at 4am and buy a kebab, rent a movie and get some shampoo. I love my shower, my bread bin and our tortoise, Yoshi.”

She’s also given an insight into her 23-year marriage to Kris on a handful of occasions and has even spoken about their bedroom antics, confessing she puts “too much pressure on herself” to get intimate.

“I think we put way too much pressure on ourselves – I haven’t had sex with my husband for two days, let’s do it on the stairs,” Claudia jokingly said to The Sun back in October 2020.
