Calcutta High Court protecting BJP leaders, claims Abhishek Banerjee; party responds

By Suryagni Roy: Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee has accused the Calcutta High Court of granting protection to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders.

This allegation is in cognisance with the high court’s order to not take any coercive action against BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari. On September 6, 2021, the Calcutta HC also ordered a stay of proceedings in three cases against Suvendu Adhikari.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, Banerjee claimed that the Calcutta HC grants protection to the BJP leaders. Referring to Justice Rajasekhar Mantha’s judgment, Banerjee said that, if Suvendu Adhikari does something wrong on Twitter, an FIR couldn’t be registered.

“Antisocials are being given protection from the high court. It’s saddening. The ones who should be arrested, are being protected by the high court,” said Abhishek Banerjee, adding, “The 14 people who were attacked during rural polls, if there is anyone to be blamed, it’s the High Court.”

He also alleged that Suvendu Adhikari has been given protection by the High Court, despite his remarks about knowing how to impose Section 355 in the state and create a situation where it could be enforced.

Banerjee further said that he has compiled a list of 20 individuals, who have allegedly attacked the TMC workers during Panchayat polls and vowed to hand it over to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

He also launched a scathing attack against Governor CV Ananda Bose for not addressing the attacks on the 14 TMC workers, questioning the lack of action by the police.

“You may ask why the police are not doing anything. The High Court has given them blanket protection,” he said while sharpening his attack.

He also raised questions about his chances of receiving protection from the same judge if he were in need.

“If I want protection from this judge, will he give me? He won’t. The ones who conduct violence in polls are being given protection by High Court,” he highlighted.

The second-in-command in TMC further urged the High Court to review its decisions, emphasising the expectation of an impartial judiciary.

BJP ON ABHISHESK BANERJEE’S ALLEGATIONS

Responding to the allegations made by Abhishesk Banerjee, BJP MP Dilip Ghosh said that it was due to the courts that the TMC leader is outside, or else he would have been in Tihar Jail with Anubrata Mandal.

“It is due to the courts that he (Abhishesk Banerjee) is outside. He got protection too. Or else he would have been in Tihar jail sitting with Anubrata Mandal. It is because of the courts that he is walking freely,” Ghosh said.
