Director de OPS llama a la acción para reducir la mortalidad materna

Washington, DC, 18 de junio de 2024 (OPS)- El director de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS), doctor Jarbas Barbosa, hizo un llamado urgente a la acción para reducir la mortalidad materna en la región de las Américas. En el año 2020, en América Latina y el Caribe, se produjo una muerte materna cada hora, retrocediendo dos décadas en los indicadores de salud materna en la región.

“Estas cifras no solo implican un empeoramiento en los resultados, sino una profundización de las desigualdades, que representan tragedias particulares e inaceptables que en la mayoría de los casos serían evitables”, afirmó Barbosa en el evento Cero muertes maternas evitables, organizado por OPS, que tuvo lugar el 18 de junio de 2024. 

El doctor Barbosa expresó que “el número de muertes de mujeres embarazadas no condice con el grado de desarrollo de esta región”, y manifestó que es imperioso eliminar esa contradicción.

La pandemia de COVID-19 evidenció las vulnerabilidades de las infraestructuras sanitarias de América Latina y el Caribe, exacerbando las desigualdades en el acceso a los servicios de salud, con un profundo impacto sobre las mujeres. La razón de mortalidad materna se incrementó en un 15% entre 2016 y 2020.

Sin embargo, previo a la pandemia, la razón de mortalidad materna en las Américas ya mostraba señales de estancamiento, alejando a la región de la posibilidad de cumplir con las metas y compromisos asumidos, como los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible y la Agenda Sostenible de Salud de las Américas.

Según los Indicadores Básicos de Salud de OPS, actualizados en 2023, más del 90% de las mujeres reciben al menos cuatro consultas durante el embarazo; cerca del 97% de los partos son atendidos en establecimientos de salud y más del 96% son atendidos por personal calificado. Además, la cobertura en servicios de salud sexual y reproductiva supera el 80%. “Es necesario examinar por qué esta inversión no se traduce en mejores resultados” enfatizó Barbosa.

El director de la OPS señaló que hay múltiples factores que inciden en la mortalidad materna, incluyendo aspectos socioeconómicos, culturales, educativos y ambientales. Para abordar estos desafíos, Barbosa instó a implementar estrategias que contemplen intervenciones reparativas a las situaciones de vulnerabilidad y abordar “aspectos relacionados con las normas y roles de género”.

“El sector salud debe ser un agente de cambio transformador”, afirmó Barbosa, y señaló que nueve de cada diez muertes maternas podrían evitarse mediante el acceso universal a servicios de atención materna de calidad y métodos anticonceptivos modernos, entre otros recursos.

“Lograr la expansión de los sistemas de la salud basado en la Atención Primaria de Salud, para asegurar el acceso universal a la salud y la cobertura universal, puede ser el factor crítico para reducir la mortalidad materna en la Región”.

La Estrategia para acelerar la reducción de la mortalidad materna presentada por la OPS ofrece un marco de acción que debe adaptarse a cada país y contexto, con acciones complementarias e integradas. Barbosa instó a los países a priorizar este tema y a comprometerse con la implementación de la estrategia, focalizando la acción a nivel local y especialmente en las mujeres que viven en condiciones de mayor vulnerabilidad.

“Nuestros países deberán aportar los recursos necesarios para la acción, movilizando a todos los sectores, incluyendo el académico, la sociedad civil y las comunidades más impactadas”, subrayó.
