An investigation is underway to determine the cause of a fire in Gatineau overnight that left dozens of people homeless.
Firefighters went to 166 Rue Principale in Gatineau’s Aylmer districts at around 9:20 p.m., officials report. They were faced with smoke conditions on several floors.
Firefighters assisted dozens of residents in leaving the fire. Some of them had taken to their balconies to avoid the smoke.

While there were no injuries reported, a few dozen people were taken into the care of the Red Cross.
The fire was under control at 2 a.m.
According to its website, the Aylmer Arms residence is a non-profit organization that provides affordable lodging for semi-retired and retired seniors.
“All residents must be over 55 of years of age and self-dependent.”
