En el Día Mundial del Donante de Sangre, OPS hace un llamado para que más personas se unan como donantes voluntarios

13 de junio de 2024 (OPS/OMS)- Con motivo del Día Mundial del Donante de Sangre, que se celebra cada 14 de junio, siendo este año su 20º aniversario, la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) hace un llamado para motivar a más personas a donar sangre voluntariamente para aumentar la disponibilidad de reservas esenciales de sangre.

Las donaciones de sangre voluntarias y no remuneradas constituyen la base de un suministro de sangre seguro y suficiente. Además, desempeñan un papel crucial en el apoyo a pacientes con una amplia gama de problemas crónicos de salud, como la hemofilia y las deficiencias inmunitarias. “De acuerdo con los últimos datos disponibles para 34 países de la Región, en el 2020 se alcanzaron los 8,2 millones de unidades de sangre, de las cuales el 48% provenían de donantes voluntarios”, dijo el doctor Jarbas Barbosa, Director de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS).

Desafortunadamente, en muchos países, la demanda es mayor que la oferta, y los servicios de sangre enfrentan el reto de que haya suficiente disponibilidad y, al mismo tiempo, de garantizar su calidad y seguridad. Ante esto, Barbosa indicó que aun cuando las cifras generales de la Región muestran un aumento importante en las donaciones y en la disponibilidad y seguridad de la sangre, la tasa de donación de sangre por cada 1,000 personas en los países de ingresos medios y bajos sigue estando entre 50 y 70 por ciento por debajo de los países de ingresos más altos.

Este escenario pone de relieve la necesidad de que los países pongan en marcha programas de sangre sostenibles, con sistemas y servicios regulados que les permitan disponer de sangre segura en cantidad suficiente para satisfacer las necesidades de los pacientes.

Las transfusiones de sangre y hemoderivados ayudan a los pacientes a vivir más tiempo y a tener una mejor calidad de vida. También significan un apoyo en procedimientos médicos y quirúrgicos complejos, por lo que son indispensables en los servicios de atención maternoinfantil y en casos de desastres de origen natural o causados por los seres humanos.

“La donación de sangre ayuda a fortalecer los vínculos sociales y comunitarios. Además, la promoción de la donación voluntaria y la coordinación entre las redes de servicios de sangre contribuyen a mejorar y a salvar la vida de millones de personas”, agregó el doctor Barbosa.

En este contexto, la OPS junto con el Ministerio de Salud del Perú han organizado una serie de actividades para conmemorar el Día Mundial del Donante de Sangre. Perú ha sido designado como país sede de la celebración en este 2024, cuya ceremonia oficial se realizará mañana 14 de junio a través de un evento presencial.

La campaña mundial de este año tiene como lema “20 años celebrando la generosidad: ¡Muchas gracias, donantes de sangre!”, a través de la cual se busca reconocer y agradecer a los a los millones de donantes voluntarios de sangre que han contribuido a mejorar la salud y el bienestar de millones de personas en todo el mundo.

Tras dos décadas, este hito marca una ocasión trascendental para reflexionar sobre los logros, abordar los desafíos y visualizar un futuro en el que se pueda contar con acceso universal a transfusiones de sangre seguras para pacientes y donantes.
