Ottawa police have charged a 65-year-old Hamilton woman with four counts of assault after hot tea was splashed on demonstrators on Saturday afternoon.
The hot liquid caused “minor injuries,” police said.
Police did not identify the accused, the injured protesters or any group that may have been conducting a protest march that day.
“This took place at a demonstration downtown last Saturday afternoon,” an Ottawa Police Service spokesperson said via email.
“We do not identify parties that demonstrate or their causes,” the spokesperson said.
Disruptive activities by or against demonstrators can lead to arrests and criminal charges under relevant Criminal Code sections, police said in a news release.
Threats of violence, property destruction, or other unlawful conduct, like obstruction of police, are not protected under the Charter of Rights and interfere with police’s ability to focus on public safety of the overall crowd, the release added.
