When Hailey Bieber was first spotted wearing a pair of New Balance 530 trainers, £100 here, the retro, dad-style sneakers took the world by storm and quickly became one of the most coveted pair of trainers around.
The model styled hers with everything from baby tees and jeans to mini dresses and oversized blazers, and quickly cemented them as one of the must-have footwear choices for fashion fans and street style lovers alike.
Although we’ll admit we were eagerly coveting the chunky vintage-inspired trainers, we were less thrilled with the £100 price tag, which is why we’ve been hunting high and low for an alternative that’ll give us the supermodel’s look for less.

Thankfully, we haven’t had to look too hard, as there have been plenty of affordable alternatives hitting the high street over recent months, including Marks and Spencer’s Chunky Mesh Detail Trainers, £49.50 here, which launched at the end of last year (and are still in stock, FYI).
However, the £50 price tag still didn’t quite satisfy our bargain hunting tendencies, which is why we were thrilled when H&M’s latest launch caught our eye. The Chunky Trainers, £37.99 here, have an almost identical retro sportswear look, and would look just as at home on our dad’s feet as he mowed the lawn as they would on Hailey herself – exactly what we were looking for.
The trainers are available in sizes 2-9, and have a white and grey colourway complete with mesh sections, reflective details and a chunky, padded edge and tongue – just like the New Balance 530 trainers, £100 here.

They’re also lace fastening, and have a loop at the front, with pique linings and insoles, and a chunky 5cm high bubble-esque sole with a pattern on the bottom that has the same arched shape as the original New Balance 530s – not too shabby considering there’s more than £60 difference in the price.
If you want even more of a saving, Jack Wills also has a pair of near identical Retro Runner Trainers, £33 here (was £46.99), which have been reduced in the January sale and will give you a similar retro-inspired look that Hailey loves.
The H&M Chunky Trainers, £37.99 here, are still brand new to the H&M website and as such have only racked up two reviews so far, with one of them being a five star review which says: “My favourite shoes, will buy another pair. Great for running and for casual outfit as well.” So, whether you’re planning on running a marathon or hitting up your favourite brunch spot, these are going to become your go-to trainers of 2024.
