Nicolle Dickson, best known for her role as the rebellious Bobby Simpson in Home and Away, left a lasting impact on viewers during her five-year tenure on the show. Her portrayal of the troubled teen garnered her immense popularity, making her the nation’s sweetheart at the time.
After tackling a series of dramatic storylines, including homelessness, the loss of her mother, a teen pregnancy, and a tumultuous marriage to her foster brother, Nicolle made the difficult decision to leave the show. In a tragic plot twist, her character met her end in a devastating boat accident, leaving fans heartbroken.
Despite her stardom, Nicolle shared in a 2018 interview with Woman’s Day, that the transition from a long-running soap opera to new acting opportunities was more challenging than expected.

She told Woman’s Day: “I’d been on Home and Away for six years and you can get stale doing a show like that.
“While I was pleased I went out with a bang, it was tougher than I imagined to find [acting] work afterwards. Once you’ve been in the public eye, it’s really hard to get a normal job.”
Despite stepping away from the spotlight, Nicolle made several TV appearances, notably on the Australian reality show Survivor. Even years after leaving Home and Away, people still recognise her on the streets and express their love for the character she played for so many years.

“Surprisingly, people still remember me from way back then and tell me I have not changed,” she told the West Australian in 2018.
“So, Bobby has not left me yet. She was such a great part of my life and my early 20s and I have great memories.”
Nicolle added: “It is quite weird, because even though it was so long (ago) and I have had a whole life since then and I have grown-up children, it still seems so familiar at the same time.”

However, the public recognition made it tough for Nicolle to secure a regular job, leading her to accept her husband’s offer of helping with the accounts for his business. She pursued an accountancy degree and has since carved a new career path, adding: “I am pretty happy where I am.”
Over its impressive 30-year span, Home and Away has reached audiences in over 140 countries, serving as a launching pad for the careers of more than 8000 actors and extras. The show’s profound impact is evident in the success stories of several Hollywood stars, such as Chris Hemsworth, Isla Fisher, Ryan Kwanten, and Julian McMahon.
Among the array of talented individuals who graced the show, Naomi Watts, Simon Baker, Guy Pearce, and the late Heath Ledger are notable names that have also made memorable appearances, contributing to the show’s rich legacy.
