How Donald Is Alive In Invincible Season 2

How Donald Is Alive In Invincible Season 2

The following story contains spoilers for Invincible Season 2 and also some of the comic book source material.

THERE ARE A lot of things in Prime Video’s fantastic superhero animated series Invincible that could be classified under the label of “trippy.” Let’s start with jut a couple: weird powers, ultra violence, intergalactic travel. But you know what’s even more trippy? Even more jarring? When a character that we all saw die is just back, with absolutely zero explanation, let alone an acknowledgement that we saw his demise clear as day.

That’s exactly what’s happening in the early parts of Invincible Season 2, as the show’s loyal viewers are wondering why the bespectacled GDA. agent Donald Ferguson (voiced by Chris Diamantopoulos)—who without question died in the show’s Season 1, Episode 7, “We Need to Talk.” Despite having his back cracked and cut open by Omni-Man (and then valiantly trying to suicide bomb himself to kill the mustachioed “hero,” to no avail), Donald was back working alongside Cecil Stedman (voiced by Walton Goggins) in the Season 2 premiere episode, with zero explanation.

What the hell is going on here? It’s a damn good question. We saw this Waylon Smithers-esque man—loyal to the Nick Fury-esque Cecil like no one else—fully die. It wasn’t a maybe he died kind of thing either; if he wasn’t going to bleed out from the wound Omni-Man gave him (and, let’s be real, he was about to rip him into pieces anyway), the blast would’ve done it anyway. And yet there he is: back like nothing ever happened.

Season 2 of Invincible will without question provide an answer soon enough. But if you want to know right now what’s going on, we’ve got you covered.

How is Donald alive in Season 2 of Invincible?

Amazon Prime

As with many things based on source material, the answer to the question of how Donald is alive in Season 2 of Invincible likely lies directly in the source material.

The following explanation includes spoilers from the Invincible comic, so only read on if you don’t mind what is likely to be a spoiler within the Prime Video series.

In the Invincible comic series (which ran for 144 issues between 2003 and 2018), it turns out that Donald Ferguson is a robot. He wasn’t always a robot, though—he was a GDA agent who died during a mission. But because Cecil Stedman and GDA are, essentially, Invincible’s version of Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. in Marvel, they have all sorts of technological resources—including the ability to preserve the brain of a dead person and bring them back to life as a robot. Except, initially at least, Donald didn’t know he was a robot when he was revived (despite being killed and revived repeatedly).

Just like in the series, Donald’s nature as a robot wasn’t initially revealed in the comics—that came in Invincible #38.

That being said, he also wasn’t killed by Omni-Man in the comics as he was in Season 1, Episode 7. But that also would seem to serve a larger purpose—because Donald’s death in Season 1 was so prominent and such a notable moment, it’s all the more jarring when he’s back alive without any explanation as soon as Season 2 picks up. What we don’t know as of now is whether Donald’s explosive death in Season 1 was the first (of many), or just the latest of his many deaths and rebirths.

It’s likely that, following suit with the comics, we’ll get a big reveal about Donald’s robotic nature in the coming episodes of Season 2.
