How Kate is key to Prince William’s wellbeing as he shares mental health toolbox

Over the years, mental wellbeing has emerged as a subject close to the hearts of the Prince and Princess of Wales, with Prince William using World Mental Health Day on Tuesday, 10 October to speak about his mental health “toolbox”.

During an engagement at the Exploring our Emotional Worlds event, William opened up about how he maintains his mental wellbeing and explained how “things, like walking, fresh air [and] getting away from screens” help him on a day-to-day basis.

He continued: “Having a laugh. Humour for me is a big deal – I love to laugh. You’ve got to look at the lighter things in life sometimes to feel good,” and said that “time with my friends, time with my family – things like that really matter to me.”

For royal fans, 41 year old William’s words may sound familiar as some of the coping mechanisms mentioned have been associated with the Princess of Wales in the past.

With Kate’s interest in early years development, back in 2020 royal expert Katie Nicholl OK! spoke about how Kate, 41, is “very strict” when it comes to managing how much time her children spend in front of screens.

“The emphasis during this time will be on arts and crafts, painting and doing things that aren’t screen-orientated. Kate is usually very strict on screen time and keeps it to a minimum. The children aren’t allowed their own devices,” she said.

Meanwhile, the mum-of-three is also said to be a fan of ‘forest bathing’, which refers to spending time outside in wooded areas, with the wellbeing practice inspiring her Back To Nature garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2019.

Elsewhere, whether they’re completing royal engagements or posing for family photos at home, William and Kate are often seen laughing and joking together – another thing the Prince of Wales has credited as being part of his mental health “toolbox”.

During one such engagement in Norfolk in 2016, Prince William had something very funny to say about his wife’s cooking skills, though Kate later got her own back during a cooking competition hosted by Dame Mary Berry.

When the pair arrived at the event, Kate joked that Prince William was looking forward to having a break from her cooking. She said: “William has to put up with my cooking most of the time.” To which William laughed: “It’s the reason I’m so skinny!”

Just last year, Kate gave a rousing speech about the importance of parents looking out for their own mental health when she encouraged them to find “creative ways” to express their thoughts and feelings.

“Whether that’s through photography, through art, through drama, through music or poetry, it’s finding those things that make you feel good about yourself,” she said.
