If you’re planning a holiday in 2024, knowing what luggage you can take can be confusing. That’s because each airline has its own rules when it comes to cabin bags, including size limits and costs.
Ryanair, Jet2, easyJet, TUI and other airlines all have specific rules for cabin bags – and some of them have changed this year. If you don’t follow these rules, you might end up having to pay extra charges at the airport, reports Birmingham Live.
So, it’s really important to check the rules for your booking before you fly. We’ve put together all the key information you’ll need on the cabin bag rules for each major airline below.

Ryanair
For Ryanair, anyone who books a flight is automatically allowed to bring a small personal bag with them on board for free. This could be a handbag or backpack but it must fit under the seat in front of you and measure no more than 40 x 20 x 25cm.
You can get a Ryanair Airlines Underseat Cabin Bag from Amazon for just £12.99. If you’re planning to fly with Ryanair and want to bring a larger cabin bag, you’ll need to pay extra for Priority Booking.
This usually costs between £6 and £38, and it’s cheaper if you book it when you buy your ticket rather than at the airport. Your cabin bag can’t be bigger than 55 x 40 x 20cm, must weigh less than 10kg, and needs to fit in the overhead locker.
A great option is the Clifton Cabin Bag by luxury suitcase brand Antler, which is currently £136, reduced from £170. Remember to check the weight and size of your cabin bag before you head to the airport because Ryanair charges a gate bag fee for carry-on luggage that’s too big or heavy.
If your bag weighs more than 10kg or doesn’t fit in the baggage sizers, you could be charged £11 per extra kg and your oversized cabin bag will be put in the hold.

EasyJet
Just like Ryanair, easyJet lets all passengers bring a small personal bag on board its flights for free. This bag can be up to 45 x 36 x 20cm including any handles and wheels, can’t weigh more than 15kg, and has to be kept under the seat in front of you.
The Rock Luggage Medium Cabin Backpack from Dunelm, priced at £26, is the perfect size. If you want to bring a larger carry-on bag on an easyJet flight, you’ll have to pay extra – starting from £5.99.
This bag can’t be bigger than 56 x 45 x 25cm, like the Aerolite Cabin bag available for £57.99 from Amazon. If you’re caught bringing an oversized cabin bag to the departure gate, the airline will charge you an Airport Bag Fee of £48 and any excess luggage will also be put in the hold.

TUI
TUI has updated its luggage rules just in time for the 2024 holiday season. Now, customers will be able to take more bags with them when they fly with TUI.
If you booked your trip on or after December 21, 2023, for trips after May 1 this year, you’ll now be allowed a 20kg bag. If you’re staying at TUI BLUE, Holiday Village, or A La Carte hotels, your allowance goes up to 25kg.
You can also bring one piece of hand luggage on board, as long as it weighs up to 10kg and measures up to 55 x 40 x 20cm. For example, Prestwick Cabin in Grey from Antler, which is now only £85 in the sale, reduced from £170.
You can also bring one small personal item like a handbag or laptop bag, but it must be small enough to fit under the seat. If you go over your baggage allowance, you could be charged an extra fee at the airport of £14 per kg, or £55 per 15kg bag.
This goes up to £18 per kg or £75 per 15kg bag on longer flights.

Jet2
Jet2 lets its passengers carry one piece of hand luggage free of charge, as long as it weighs no more than 10kg and is no larger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, including any wheels and handles. For example, this £24 Elements Cabin Suitcase from Dunelm.
Any luggage that weighs or measures more than this will need to be checked into the aircraft hold, and passengers may have to pay an extra charge. Travellers can also bring a small personal item on board as long as it fits underneath the seat in front of you.
Jet2 doesn’t specify a size limit for this bag, but the Chelsea Overnight Bag from Antler is specifically designed to fit neatly under a plane seat, priced at £140. Passengers who exceed their allowance may be charged £12 per kg.
Amazon’s Fiber Knits Cabin Bag

British Airways
BA’s standard plane tickets include a cabin bag and handbag free of charge. Passengers who bring more than two pieces of hand baggage, or exceed the permitted size, may be told to stow their larger bags into the hold.
Cabin bags on British Airways flights can measure up to 56 x 45 x 25cm and weigh a maximum of 23kg, such as this Clifton Cabin Bag, now down to £119 in the Spring sale. Handbags are limited to 40 x 30 x 15cm and 23kg and must fit under the seat in front, like this Fiber Knits Cabin Bag which costs £10.49 from Amazon.
To avoid unexpected fees at the airport, passengers are advised to check the luggage information included in their booking confirmation.
