TV star Therryi Jay has battled with her weight since she was young but after drastically changing her lifestyle lost 23kg in less than a year, going from a size 22 to 16. Soon after the impressive weightloss, the 33 year old discovered she was pregnant with her first child, something she never thought could happen, despite longing to be a mother.

Therryi, who hails from London, Lewisham, has starred in three TV shows; BBC Three’s Can Fat Teens Hunt? when she was just 16, Channel 4’s The Perfect Pitch and Channel 4’s Around The World in 80 Weighs. It wasn’t until the latter that Therryi found herself shredding weight having completely changed her lifestyle.

Therryi Jay, who has appeared on various TV shows, used to weigh 135kg

She was scouted for the Channel 4 show, which followed a group of Brits living with obesity travelling the world to lose weight, in November 2022 when she weighed 21 stone. At the same time, Therryi was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body, states the NHS.

Because of the diagnosis, Therryi became more conscious about her weight and exercised more which saw her drop down to 18st, before filming for the show even began. During her time on Around The World in 80 Weighs, which aired in January 2024, Therryi travelled to Japan, Tonga, Texas and Mumbai to experience their national diets and lifestyles.

By the time filming had finished in July 2023, Therryi weighed 17st, having lost 23kg in less than a year, by changing her lifestyle, exercising, eating healthier and meal planning. Speaking exclusively to OK! Therryi shared: “It was very much about me overcoming the emotional burden of weight, you hold on to it mentally rather than just physically.

“I was so focused on just no longer feeling the way I felt but now, after the show, I’ve been given so many tools to help myself and others – the show completely changed my mindset.

“I don’t have habits anymore – I used to eat 14 churros with chocolate sauce, now I’ll only eat two.”

She added: “We were pushed by the show, but we still had to continue losing weight when we got home which was really good. We were still active, and we were still learning how to maintain our meal planning and our new little healthy lifestyle by ourselves.

“The show was the biggest life-changing experience I could have been offered – it was the cloak being removed”.

During the show, Therryi said she wanted to become a mum, but told us: “Being overweight, I’ve always been told you’re high risk, you might not get pregnant, there’s always been a taboo attached to my weight and pregnancy, so I never really thought I’d be able to have a baby.”

Then just three months after filming finished, Therryi found out she was pregnant. “I didn’t have regular periods because of my weight, so I thought I was going through early menopause with my symptoms, but I was pregnant”, she joyfully told us.

“I’ve been with my partner for four years, and only now it’s happened. I believe that if I hadn’t lost the weight, hadn’t changed my lifestyle and hadn’t started consuming my meal plans, my food, and been in a different mental place, I feel like I would have miscarried.”

The mum-to-be added: “By the time I found out I was pregnant, I wasn’t even pre-diabetic anymore.” Speaking further about her pregnancy, the 33 year old said: “I’m excited but initially I was quite scared about my pregnancy, there’s so many negative stories towards black maternal health and pregnancy.

“I’m petrified of dying and not being able to have my child because all I see is propaganda information.” Despite the worry that comes with her pregnancy, Therryi went on to share her delight at becoming a mum “I’m most looking forward to holding my son, I’m excited to meet him and love him.

“I said I wanted to be a mum and it happened.” Therryi enjoyed a luxurious babymoon in Jamaica before she gets ready to welcome her baby boy during the summer.
