‘I stayed in hotel with a hidden temple and ballroom in the heart of East London
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

If you’re looking for somewhere stylish and sophisticated but also comfortable and like a home away from home, then Andaz London Liverpool Street is the place to be.

Last refurbished in 2018, the imposing building pays respect to the local neighbourhood and history with its decor. As you walk into the lobby, you’re welcomed by a huge feature wall by local art collective Le Gun, and you feel like you might be in one of the coolest hotels in the city.

As you check-in, you’re welcomed with a smile and attentive staff ensure you’re aware of everything the hotel has to offer – including happy hour in the lobby.

If you weren’t already impressed, then you soon will be. Here’s OK!’s review of Andaz London Liverpool Street..

As someone who lived in East London for many years, I’m slightly biased when it comes to the location of Andaz London Liverpool Street. But, you honestly couldn’t find a better location.

Situated right next to Liverpool Street Station, you have links to Stanstead airport, the Elizabeth Line to Heathrow and multiple tube lines. But if you can’t get to where you’re going from there, Moorgate, Aldgate and Shoreditch High Street station are all within walking distance.

You might want to venture further afield but there’s so much on your doorstep to explore in the local area. Explore Old Spitalfields Market, wander up Brick Lane and fill your Instagram feed with snaps of Columbia Road Flower Market. Or, if you head in the opposite direction, you can see some of London’s most historic landmarks including St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridger and the Tower of London.

You’ll find yourself extending your stay just so you can see everything!

Rooms

King room in Andaz London Liverpool Street

The room size left me stunned! There was plenty of space and a kingsize bed

The bathrooms are spacious with a fast-filling tub – perfect to relax after a long day exploring

The moment I walked into my King Room, I was stunned. I could not believe the size of the room.

After a long day exploring, stretch out in the plush king size bed, or curl up with a cup of coffee in one of the large reading chairs by the window so you can watch the world go by. If you’re here for work, the Andaz has you covered with a dedicated work space.

One of the highlights was the spacious bathroom, with a fast-fill bathtub where I could relax before dinner and I loved the yukata robes.

The rooms are full of small touches that really make you feel like you’re at home. Artwork inspired by the neighbourhood decorate the walls, while the complimentary mini bar is stocked with snacks from local suppliers.

Most surprisingly, despite being right next to a busy station and situated on a main road, my room was incredibly peaceful and I slept soundly.

Food and Drink

Rake's Cafe Bar

I headed to Rake’s Café Bar and settled in at a table in The Parlour

For dinner, I headed to Rake’s Café Bar and settled in at a table in The Parlour, which is one of three rooms in the restaurant. With high ceilings and ornate detailing, it makes for a stunning dinner setting.

You can choose from their eight signature cocktails while you peruse the menu – or, like me, opt for an old favourite. The bar staff were more than happy to whip up a margarita for me.

I started with the Padron Peppers and was not prepared for the portion – there was no scrimping when it came to the size and they were delicious dipped into the parsley aioli. I followed with the Crispy Buttermilk Chicken Burger, which was almost too big to finish and came with plenty of fries.

I just had room to try the Trio of Chocolate and Ice Cream Selection – which were perfect for a warm summer’s evening.

For breakfast, you can choose to return to Rake’s or head to Eastway Brasserie for the buffet. There’s plenty to choose from with a huge selection of pastries, fruit and cooked items. Unlike most hotels I’ve been to, Andaz ensures the food on offer is fresh by only putting a small amount out at a time.

If you have space, make sure you pick up one of the banana and choc chip muffins to finish – I’d return especially for these!

Services

Masonic Temple

A Masonic Temple is concealed deep inside the hotel and was only discovered when it was refurbished

1901 ballroom in Andaz London

If you want to host a wedding or celebration, then the 1901 Ballroom is perfect

I was pleasantly surprised by my stay at Andaz London Liverpool Street. Despite being busy, staff ensure you have everything you need and answer questions you have are answered.

There are plenty of touches that make your stay comfortable and unique too. Every evening, Andaz hosts a happy hour for guests staying in the hotel, with drinks and canapés. Settle into one of the plush chairs in the lobby and sip on a cold glass of wine or Aperol Spritz.

If you want to truly relax then head to the Health Club, which has a state of the art fitness studio. After a work out, head into the steam room before cooling off in the shower. Access is complimentary for all hotel guests.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about the hotel is the fact it has a Masonic Temple concealed deep inside. It is the City’s only original Freemason’s meeting lodge built in 1912 and was discovered by chance when the hotel was refurbished. If you want somewhere truly unique for a wedding or celebration, then this is perfect. Or, you can host your party in the Grade II listed 1901 Ballroom – complete with a stained glass some, which survived two world wars.

Even though at times the size of Andaz London Liverpool Street made me feel like I was in maze, there is a surprise waiting around every corner and I only wish I’d had more time to explore.

Prices

For one weekend in July for two guests, a King Bed room starts at £345 or if you’re a Hyatt member, it’s £328 a night. If you want more space, then the King Bed Deluxe is priced at £510. And if you want a weekend in the city with loved ones, then a Family Room is £638.
