You know that phrase ‘slept like a baby’? I can’t relate, especially not during the summer months. For a multitude of reasons, as soon as the summer months approach, my sleep quality takes a nosedive, and I’m forever looking for a solution to the problem.
Since some of my sleep problems come from an inability to get comfortable in clammy weather, I’ve tried just about every fan going to make my room cool enough to sleep with a light duvet on (I simply cannot get cosy under a sad little sheet), but either the noise of them keeps me awake or they just blow the hot air around the room. I also have the fun little addition of being a hayfever sufferer and lying on my bed at nighttime leaves me feeling congested. My partner is a lucky man, I know. Though, he actually sleeps worse than me in the heat.
This year, I’ve decided I’m willing to blow the budget in a bid to get a good night’s sleep, so I’ve got my hands on what I’m told is the gold standard of fans: Dyson’s Purifier HEPA CoolTM Formaldehyde TP09 purifying fan, £549.99. Yes, it’s a little pricey, but I can girl maths the cost by working it out as a daily cost of a perfectly reasonable £1.50.

Setting up the fan was a breeze as I delegated the task to my partner. It took him roughly 10 minutes, with me supervising the process. We did encounter a minor issue getting the filter caps to click into place, and one side still doesn’t feel very secure. I’ll need to revisit some online video instructions to see if we’ve made a mistake somewhere, but the fan is currently operating fine as it is.
Once it was up and running, I used the handy remote control to try out the settings. I like that the fan can be placed on a timer and also how it has a special nighttime mode where the fan will cleverly monitor and respond to changes in air quality, but only using its quietest settings and with its LCD screen dimmed.
Mostly I turn the setting straight to auto mode, which means your machine will pause when the target air quality has been reached, switching on again when the air quality levels drop. All very smart and handy for someone like me who doesn’t get much enjoyment out of reading user manuals.
I always like a fan to be directed right at me when I sleep, but if you don’t you can hit a button to make the airflow go out the back of the unit. You can also control the oscillation, temperature and speed of airflow, meaning you’re getting the exact level of cool you want.
I gave the fan a full week’s trial before sharing my thoughts because I wouldn’t endorse such an expensive item without being certain it’s worth the investment. Honestly, I believe it’s worth every penny as it significantly improved my sleep from the first night of use – a fact confirmed by my sleep-tracking watch.
After consistently good sleep on the second and third nights, I realised this wasn’t just a fluke. The only time I felt slightly unrested was when my partner set the unit to a one-hour timer, forcing me to scramble for the remote to restore the cool. One thing I haven’t done yet is sync the fan with the MyDyson app on my phone, but that’s on my to-do list for this weekend.
Are there any negatives? Well, I didn’t anticipate the need to replace the filters. Although it’s supposed to be a quick and easy process, and the machine will alert you when it’s time (approximately every 12 months), it’s an additional cost that might be a hurdle for some. Apart from that, no complaints. It’s hands down the best fan and purifier I’ve ever used.
