Professor Rintu Banerjee has been appointed as the first woman deputy director of IIT Kharagpur, marking a historic milestone for the institution. With a distinguished career in biotechnology, she has significantly contributed to academia and industry through various high-impact roles and research initiatives.

Professor Rintu Banerjee has been appointed as the deputy director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, making history as the first woman to hold this position. Professor Banerjee has had a distinguished career in biotechnology, founding and currently chairing the P K Sinha Centre for Bioenergy and Renewables. She has also led the Centre for Rural Development, Innovative and Sustainable Technology, and served as Head of the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering at IIT Kharagpur.
Throughout her career, Professor Banerjee has managed numerous significant roles, including Chairperson of the Centre of Excellence in Precision Agriculture and Food Nutrition, Nodal Coordinator for Australia and New Zealand for SPARC, and Coordinator for RuTAG. She holds a PhD in Microbial Biotechnology from IIT Kharagpur’s Chemical Engineering Department and has been active in industry-academia collaborative research, resulting in multiple national and international patents.
Among her notable achievements, Professor Banerjee has successfully transferred her 1G & 2G Ethanol technology to the industry for commercialisation. She has also authored two books on environmental biotechnology and OMICS-based approaches in Plant Biotechnology and managed several high-profile government and industry-sponsored projects.
Her expertise has been sought globally, having visited countries such as Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Finland, Egypt, Australia, the US, Taiwan, Japan, the UK, South Korea, Laos, Thailand, Dubai, Doha, Brazil, Canada, and Malaysia for scientific collaborations and as a visiting professor.
HER ACHIEVEMENTS
Professor Banerjee was conferred the Panjabrao Deshmukh Award for Outstanding Women Scientist from ICAR; Best Woman Bioscientist form Biotech Research Society of India; Young Scientist Award’ 94 from the Association for Food Scientists and Technologists (India); Dr Prem Dureja Endowment; Institute Chair Professor from IIT Kharagpur; Louis Pasteur Award; Madan Mohan Malviya Award and Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award. She has also received the Most Inspiring Women Engineer/Scientist for the year 2014, for her exemplary work in the field of Science & Technology by Engineering Watch, New Delhi and has more than 6000+ citations under her name.
