Ottawa paramedics said a man in his 60s was transported to hospital in critical condition after being found without vital signs by firefighters called to battle a blaze at a row house in Ottawa’s east end on Friday.
A 911 call was made just past 10:30 a.m. reporting smoke from a two-storey attached row house in the 400 block of Brittany Drive, a short distance west of the Montfort Hospital.

Ottawa Fire Services said its crews had to force open a door to gain entry to the home. They located a lone occupant inside that displayed no vital signs and brought that man outside, where CPR was commenced.
The blaze was then extinguished on the main floor, but it had spread through the walls of the home, so firefighters had to open up the walls to douse the flames before they could spread to adjoining units, the fire service said.
No one was found in the adjoining units.
The fire was declared under control at 11:04 a.m.
