Meehan seeks to become Conservative candidate for Ottawa West-Nepean

Carol Anne Meehan has decided to re-enter the political arena, this time at the federal level.

The former longtime CTV Ottawa news anchor, radio host and Ottawa city councillor announced Monday she is seeking to become the Conservative candidate for Ottawa West-Nepean in the next federal election.

“Like so many of you, I am worried about how Liberal government policies are hurting Canadians,” Meehan said in a video posted on her X account. “They have increased the capital gains tax. They’re talking about taxing the equity in our home. We’re paying an expensive carbon tax. They’ve messed up the immigration system. So it’s unfair to newcomers to this country and to us as well.”

Meehan was sworn in to represent the Gloucester-South Nepean ward on city council in 2018 after beating incumbent Michael Qaqish by more than 500 votes.

At the time she announced she would not seek re-election in 2022, she said her political experience had been “enlightening, challenging,” and added, “it was totally infuriating.” She said the COVID-19 pandemic had made the job more difficult because it had reduced or stopped some of the more enjoyable parts of being councillor, like attending community events.

Now, at 67, she says she wants to help bring change to Canada.

“I want to be part of a strong Conservative team that will work towards solutions that will improve our lives,” she said in Monday’s video.

Liberal MP Anita Vandenbeld has held the Ottawa West-Nepean riding since 2015. Before that, Conservative John Baird had held it from 2006 until 2015.
